So this horrid Glucose Tolerance Test should be soon?

Sitting at 24 w 4 d. I presume at this appt today, my doc will tell me to go into the lab and get this so called glucose tolerance test done. I really hope this sugar/powerade like liquid really isn't as gross as some women make it out to be! It can't be so bad right?? Well lets all just cross our fingers we pass the 1st time, to avoid the 3 hr test! Any 2nd time mama's remember their first time, not being so bad!? I'm a first timer so I'm just staying positive. I'm sure I've tasted more rancid things in my days!

  • My doctor gives us the drink at 24 weeks (to hold on to and refrigerate), and then we drink it the day we come in for our 28 week appointment.
  • i already had one done because of my history of PCOS (passed!) but will have to do another at 28 weeks. it is not pleasant but not terrible. The problem is that you have to chug it. You have to finish the drink within 5 minutes for the test so there is no sipping allowed- chug chug chug. I found it best to keep very cool in the fridge and then to pour over ice.

It did do a number on my tummy though, just as a warning! Try not to throw it up because then you have to drink it again :)

    Good Luck!

  • We do it at 24 week appointment, and when I was pregnant with my ds I thought it would be horrible, based on what I heard on the bump. But it wasn't bad at all. I had no problem with it, and didn't bother me one bit.

  • Mine is scheduled for the 26th - I'll be 24w4d.

Not really looking forward to it, but I'll suck it up.

  • It's not horrid.

You drink something (that doesn't taste amazing but it's not THAT bad) wait around and then they take blood.

    It's no big deal.

  • I don't think you'll have to do it today. It's usually at 28 weeks or so, and they usually let you know ahead of time (at least my office does). They also tend to like to do it in the morning. Last time my MW gave me the drink at the appointment before, told me to keep it in the fridge, and to drink it an hour before my appointment (I actually had to write down what time I finished it). She also recommended only eating protein before the appointment (no carbs or sugars). I've heard that some providers prefer that you fast (that's why it's a morning appt), but my MW doesn't think that's a good idea.

The drink really isn't that bad. I thought it just tasted really, really sweet.

  •    Very relieved the majority of you ladies say it isn't so bad. Some women made it seem so horrible. I have no problems with the blood work part of things, being as I have had lots done, and donated blood in the past. Just cross my fingers, I don't gag it down and barf it back up(tmi?) Have to torture myself twice...I guess we just need to remember, things could be worse. It for some reason makes me think it might taste like that pedia-lite or that dehydration crap. Terrible, but drinkable.

  • Mine is at my next appointment (26w2d).  I have to go to the lab for the drink 20 min before my appointment, then they do the blood draw after my appt.  Not looking forward to it, but also hoping that I pass on take 1!!

My doc said to avoid a sugary/carb breakfast but that I don't HAVE to fast.  My appt is 7:40 am so I think DH and I will go out for breakfast after (provided I feel OK).

  • I don't remember it being that bad when I did it with DD four years ago.

  • I have to think it won't be as bad as drinking a ton of water before the a/s appointment.

  • Since I am high risk, I had an early one done at 16 weeks or so and luckily passed that one.... have to do a repeat on Sept 6th and I am NOT looking forward to it. The drink isn't that bad, its just the nervousness of if I fail it. GL to you!

Made so many amazing bump friends along the way... Congrats to my bump besties and IRL friends..sbuxsweetie (Colin is here, and is going to be a big brother!),kellbranc (Luca is growing so fast) and lots of prayers and baby dust to willamina (HUGS) So blessed to have met these ladies!!!
  • I already did mine, and it's really not that bad. Your doctor will schedule it, and then give you instructions as far as whether you will be fasting or not. For mine, I just wasn't allowed to eat or drink anything for 2 hours prior to the test, so I scheduled my appt for the afternoon. If you have to fast for 12 hours prior, I'd make your appt for as early in the day as possible.

The drink itself doesn't taste great, but it's not horrible either. They keep it really cold in the fridge, and then you have to drink it within 5 mins. It really just tastes like really strong orange soda, but thicker and sweeter. Make sure to bring yourself a snack for after the test, because you may have a headache and/or feel a little nauseous. I had a little bit of a headache after, but as soon as I ate something, I felt fine...

  • Although it did give me heart burn, it really wasn't that bad.  My doctor does it at 12 weeks and 26weeks.  This is my third pregnancy, and each time I have done the test, I had the lemon lime soda. (luckily, so far no gestational diabetes!!)  It taste like really sweet 7-up.  I heard that one is the best.

  • I did mine today, it was the lemon-lime tasting liquid, and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.   It wasn't GREAT but it wasn't bad.  Hopefully the results are good so I don't have to do any more!

This.  I've never heard anyone I know IRL complain about it.  The worst thing they complianed about was having to do the 3 hour and sit at the doctor's office that long for the blood draws.  I don't get why it's such a big deal here on the boards.

This is what my office does too.  It was no big deal last time and don't see it being a problem this time either.  I really don't understand all the hype.

  • The drink wasnt great, but its no big deal. Mine was cold and I drank it quickly. This time around they sent the drink home with me, so I just drink it an hour before my next appt.

  • This is my second pregnancy.  With my first I was bracing myself for the worst based on what I'd heard from a few others.  Honestly, this is the easiest test ever.  Mine was a glass of what tasted like flat Sprite.  I think it was probably like 6 or 8 oz.  A couple of big swallows and it was down and no bad feelings afterwards (like throwing up or otherwise).  All clinics do it differently.  I've heard that some women eat a candy bar for their glucose test.  I wouldn't worry too much about it.

  • In my experience (I had to do it early due to my mother's hx of diabetes), it wasn't so much that it tasted awful (it wasn't great but manageable) it was more the way it made me feel. I was around 10 weeks and hadn't eaten in 3 hours (was at the hospital that long) and it made me SUPER nauseous and dizzy. They let you drink water and I found drinking water helped immensely. Fingers crossed we all pass and don't have to do the 3 hour one!

  • Mine is on Wednesday. I am not terribly excited about it but eh, whatcha gonna do Smile. I am more worried about forgetting to not put anything in my stomach for 8 hours before the test. Luckily the test is first thing in the morning.

  • The drink itself wasn't that bad. But I did it on a 12-hour fast, and it made me REALLY nauseous. I was hot and dizzy and miserable. She took my blood, I walked out to the car where I had a few peanut butter crackers, ate one and immediately started vomiting. I felt much better after that and got a smoothie and took a nap. :)
