Mine was in my living room for the last birth, but I am hoping to have a larger bedroom this time around so we can put it there...then I will have everything in one place- the tub, my bed and the bathroom.
I had mine in my family room, because that is the area of the house that I feel most comfortable in. I had visions of starting a fire in the fireplace and having this serene birth in front of it. The problem is that our family room is smack dab in the middle of the house. We had quite a crowd there and I felt like people were walking past me and bothering me every other minute.
For future births we will set the tub up in a more private area, like the spare bedroom.
I would not put the tub in the area you want to rest in after the birth, because there will be a lot of commotion when they are tearing the tub apart that might disturb you.
We had ours in the dinning room. It was the only place in the house that it fit (it wasn't big our house is just that small). I didn't get to use it because my labour was too fast. If I had a choice I would put it somewhere close to the bedroom.
Ours was in our den, just a few steps from the bathroom, a short flight of stairs down from the kitchen, and near any other convenience I would need. We have comfy seating down there, a fireplace, and our TV & stereo, so it's really cozy and convenient. We're planning on the same for this time around.

We are going to put it in the living room simply because its the only place in the house that we can fit it (we live in a small apartment). We will just have to use a hose to fill and empty it. I was hoping on using my bathtub, but we tried it out last week and its just not deep enough to cover my belly. So we will set up the pool.

This is such a good point. ::pink rethinks her idea to put the birthtub in the bedroom::
we put ours up in our basement, which we use as a family room. there is a full bath very close to where we set it up, which made filling and emptying easy.
we had also been cautioned about not putting it someplace i'd want to retire to after the birth, but honestly, it wasn't a big deal at all. i ended up having a pretty short labor (baby came between breakfast and lunch), and our house was a family gathering place the rest of the day. i imagine if i'd had a long labor or a difficult labor or a middle of the night baby, i might have wanted the tub to not be in my bedroom.

Definitely something to think about, especially if you're having a lot of people involved at the birth. Personally, at that point, I was still on such a "birth high" that I didn't mind at all that people were moving around and talking and laughing and doing stuff... at that point, there's very little that would have really bugged me. By the time the adrenaline and endorphins wore off and I realized how tired I was, the pool had long been taken down and tucked away.
