Question about WIC

Hello ladies, I just wanted to pop on your board because I had a question for those who receive WIC.  I'm currently almost 16 weeks pregnant and have a WIC appt next week to see if we qualify (just a 3 person household with the baby included).  If I do qualify based on our income now... is that good for a year, or will I have to basically re-qualify again after having the baby to receive the formula vouchers?  I'm just wondering how that works.

Re: Question about WIC

  • Why would you need WIC if you've been trying to conceive for a year? Why didn't you save money so you can pay for all your own things?
  • Loading the player...
  • I know that some things vary by state as far as the WIC programs goes, but in Ohio you have to verify your income every 6 months. However, if you recieve medicaid all you have to do is show them your card. If you get insurance, your income qualifys you for WIC.

Don't mean to be ugly but this is exactly what I was thinking... If you don't have the means to provide formula for your baby you shouldn't be TRYING to conceive. With that being said, in Texas if you are on WIC while pregnant your baby automaticly qualifies but you still have to provide proof of income.

  • And you should be planning to breastfeed. Not be planning to use formula. Formula is for is you end up medically unable to breastfeed.
  • I don't think qualifying is very hard...I think maybe you need a pay stub or bring in other bills....

  • I think it totally depends on your state....but I'm not sure.  I know its a federal program but run by each state...so I'm sure rules change.

I just looked up Indiana for example and it says 6 months for new moms and one year for moms who are breastfeeding.  So I guess it depends on what services you are using.

  • I was going to quote a few people but one's a troll and the other changed her not so nice reply before I could quote it.  I know several wonderful ladies on TB who had the "right" circumstances for having a child only to unexpectedly lose jobs once they conceived. It's really not for anyone to judge, especially when unaware of each person's unique situation. The same goes for the decision to FF versus BF.

OP, I don't have an answer to your question but I hope it all works out for you. Congratulations on your pregnancy.

While I can agree that TTC while expecting to get WIC most likely isn't the smartest decision, you are being way over the top. You have no idea what her situation is. How do you know that she hasn't just lost her job? I don't think getting WIC after TTC makes her an irresponsible scumbag idiot.

I do however think that people who think that can just be huge jerks to other people just because they are making a crappy assumption are scumbags though.

Really? It's a "high horse" to expect that before people try actively to make a baby, they can afford that baby? It's a "high horse" to think that since breastmilk is what is best for a baby that a mother should at least try that before planning on formula, and even worse formula she can't pay for herself?

uh yeah it is. For example my husband just lost his job when LO turned 4 weeks old...so that really sucks. For now we have a decent savings to get us through but if we need to use a program like WIC then we will. Plus don't criticize people for not choosing to BF. BF is not easy and it is a really personal decision to make.

  • Wow. So if I'm understanding correctly there are people here who feel that those with a less than "ideal" amount of money don't deserve to have kids?

Also, WIC isn't just for formula (obviously, or she wouldn't be using it now) so it's silly to assume she's going to formula feed. And even sillier to judge her so harshly for it if she IS going to use formula. It's a personal decision.

How can some of you be so crude when you have no idea what's going on in a persons life?  We have been saving of course, and I plan on trying to breastfeed but I'm being responsible and trying to prepare incase it's needed.  I'm employed full time, and for you information my husband got laid off 3 weeks after I found out I was pregnant.  He is working a new job now, but not making nearly as much as he was before.  So it's not like I was trying for a baby for so long knowing that I couldn't provide for it.  I'm sure we'll manage just fine, but I like to prepare for the unexpected.

Yes  I don't know a ton about WIC, but I know when my nephew was little, my SIL breastfed him so they didn't get formula, but she got coupons or something for food for herself. The only specifics I remember were tuna, milk, and cereal.

Applying for WIC doesn't indicate that a person CAN'T afford to provide for their child. Why not accept some financial help if they qualify for it? Should I have rejected my college grants and taken out more loans instead?

Im on WIC as well due to losing my job shortly after getting pregnant. And since my husband is a full time student with a year left til graduating we are using the services that were put in place for those that need them. Ms. 1982 is a troll who thinks she is better than the rest of us.

As to your question, like pp have said its different in every state. Here in Alaska you have to re apply after the baby is born to get the formula added to your monthly checks.

  • Hey, screw the haters.  You paid your taxes, you have a right to these programs and you don't owe anyone an explanation.  WIC is a great program that not only helps families get healthy foods but teaches about breastfeeding and healthy nutritional programs.  Our WIC here in Columbus has lactation consultants, cooking programs and dietary programs that I wish could be available to every mother, income not a factor.  Anyway, for every aruiz there's also someone like me, who pays taxes and is happy that tax money goes to women and their children who may need the help and information :)  That's why it's there!

  • I just wanted to let you know that WIC also offers BFing support.  They will help you with a pump, lactation consultant, etc.

As far as qualifying, I have no idea.  But, I will say, my mom was on wic when I was a baby.  She left my abusive father and had nothing.  She was working, but hardly made enough to pay for the rent on her trailer.  In fact, she lived in a tent for awhile when she was pregnant with me.  People who are being terrible need to stfu.  No one knows the circumstances you are in.

  • I got on WIC the last month of my pregnancy, and was required to come in again a few weeks after my baby was born. You will have to return before 1 year for your post-partum visit in order to get continued WIC support. Sorry to see how mean people have responded to this post. Good luck!
