Dh and I are in the beginning stages of planning our 5th anniversary
trip to Hawaii (went to Maui for our HM). We are definitely going back
to Maui and we are considering splitting our time between 2 islands.
So.....
Where did you stay on Kauai?
Would you stay there again?
Was it a good location?
What did you do there?
Do you have any other tips to share?
TIA!
Re: xp: Anyone been to Kauai?
LOVED Kauai. I went 4 years ago. We had Mariott points so we stayed in Lihue. But I would stay at the Grand Hyatt. It's on the south side of the island. It's a beautiful resort.
Kauai is a "quieter" island. Nothing is open late and there are no clubs or bars. But being outside all day enjoying the amazing island you will be sound asleep by 10PM every night.
One of the most amazing things we did was an open door helicopter tour. It was fantastic. I highly recommend it. It is expensive but DH and I both agreed worth it.
DH went on a crazy 17 mile kayak trip that he still talks about to this day. I would never survive that ( horrible back) but he said it was a once in a lifetime experience.
We drove through Waimea canyon. It's looks like the Grand Canyon. It's incredible.
The island is small. You can drive to Princeville from the South side ofteh isalnd in about 35-40 minutes. Princeville on the north is like a rain forest.
We did some great hikes and just drove to different beaches. Kipu Falls is one place I remember going to.
We used the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed. You can get on amazon. A great book, lots of inside tips.
Enjoy you will have a great time!

My Blog
I have been but it was 10 years ago.
What I remember most was that it has such a relaxing feel to the island. We drove the entire island in one day. We took an awesome snorkel trip and spent a lot of time on the beach. (granted I was there to play in a softball tournamnet)
H and I went to Maui for our honeymoon and loved it. We originally wanted to split our time between Maui and Kauai but everyone we talked to said we needed longer than a week to be able to actually enjoy island hopping. We are actually hoping to be able to go back next year and spend 1 - 2 weeks there.
We were married on Kauai and My Dh's grandma lives there, so been there at least 10 times in the last 10 years! If I were going and could stay where ever I wanted I would probably stay at a rental house near Poipu or up near Hanalei.

It rains more up in Princeville/Hanalei areas but it is more lush for sure and there are some calmer coves for swimming where in Poipu it is a little rougher. Poipu is known as being more consistenly sunny and dry in comparison. If I was a hotel person I would stay at the Hyatt in Poipu hands down no comparison. I took all my Bridesmaids to the Anara spa at the resort there the day before the wedding and we enjoyed it. For food the Beach House restaurant on the beach in Poipu is fantastic at sunset and Brick Oven Pizza is out of the way but is my DH's favorite pizza on the planet, (if you go to see the Wiamea Canyon stop at Brick oven on the way home). As another poster said it is fantastic for outdoor pursuits. There are hikes that take you by beautiful waterfalls and guided sea kayak tours up the Wialua River where you can swim in some other waterfalls too. It is quaint on Kauai and has that "Old Hawaii" feel to it...not very commercialized and more low key. It is definately the most beautiful island, (it's where they filmed the Jurrasic Park movies).
