Need Advice

This is another when to tell the boss posts, so I am sorry for being redundant.  I just accepted a part time (30 hours/wk) job in a school working with special needs students.  I was 10 weeks when I interviewed and will be 12 weeks when I start.  I am not sure when to tell my supervising teacher.  I feel bad for keeping it a secret but teaching jobs are hard to come by and I didn't want to be judged solely on my pregnancy.  My dilemma now is when to tell.  Part of me wants to tell when I go in for training in a few days and the other parts thinks if I wait a little bit they will have a chance to get to see me in action.  I am very excited about my first pregnancy and I don't want it to be this black cloud following me around at work.  I am also very afraid I will let slip before I offically tell anyone.  I don't want to upset anyone and I would like to be professional, HELP!

Give it a few weeks and let them see your work ethic. Lots of women dont tell their employers until they are in their 2nd trimester anyway, so try not to worry about it too much.

    Ditto 100%.

Again ditto! Most girls I know waited until their 2nd Tri to tell their bosses.

  • Eh. "Most women" can afford to wait until 2nd trimester to tell their boss because they have job protection.

OP does not have that luxury. She will be ineligible for FMLA, ineligible for STD, and who knows how much PTO she'll have by the time she's due.

If you've already signed the offer paperwork, I'd ask for a meeting with your boss ASAP. You'll want to discuss what type of leave they'll provide for you, realizing that you'll be largely at their mercy. Waiting until after you start to tell them won't win you any good will.

I agree. I'd tell as soon as possible and let them know what your plans for returning and when you're gone are.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
