Pregnant after IF

WDYT (Baby Names)

There's a name DH and I both love...pretty much the only one either of us really like a ton. Jackson is the name. Problem is...one of my friends had a baby last Nov. and named him Jackson (she usually calls him Jack). This friend and I are close and have known each other about 10 years. However, she lives in the suburbs, we live in the city, etc and as a result we don't see each other that often (maybe once every few months). My thoughts: I would ask before we used it and she is so not the type of person to care. Also I feel like it's a pretty common name (in top 25 for 2011) and if you name your kid a popular name it's to be expected that someone else might use it. DH's thoughts: he feels weird about it.

  • If you love it I would use it.

  • *stupid computer (touchy mouse really) just erased my entire response to you, ugh!*

Anyway... the basics of what I had said was that I agree, if you love it, use it.  You are right about the popularity factor.  I have a friend who I literally see maybe once a year who had a girl a couple years ago and named her Maddison, which at the time I loved, but in a different spelling.  I was a little upset she named her that (although I don't think she knew we liked it, and we weren't pregnant at the time), but realized it didn't matter, we wouldn't see each other often anyway, so it wasn't out of the running for girls names for us.  Plus, you and your friend's son will be different ages, so I don't think it would be too weird, but I do understand the weirdness of it.

Bottom line: It's your child, you don't see this friend often, you love the name... use it :)

  • I think you should use it.

  • I say use the name.  No one owns a name.  If we have a boy, we're going to use a name that a good friend of mine named her son when he was born 1.5 years ago.  I don't plan on asking her.  I know she won't care.

  • I would still use it....you don't see each other too terribly much, and if you love it - go for it!

  • He's your baby! Name him what you want.
  • I am surprised so many people say to use it. I definitely wouldn't and if someone I know names their kid my kid's name it would definitely bother me too. But I prefer less common names so maybe I just have a different viewpoint. My DH is even more strict than I am. I have a name I LOVE and he likes too but he wont use it because it is my bff from high school's sister's, husband's name!

  • I agree with Imanurse, no one owns a name and I think it's silly for someone to be bothered by it unless its a made up name that THEY made up. It's not like he will be the first Jackson, or the last. I say, if you like the name, go for it! It doesn't sound like your friend would mind but if she did that's her deal. She'll get over it. By the way, Jackson is one of our top 2 names!

  • If your husband feels weird about it then at least ask to satisfy him, but if you love the name then use it :-)  I think it is awesome by the way!  we are naming our boy Jackson Lewis.

  • It would be a little weird if it were a really unusual name and you and your friend both used it, but like you said Jackson is trendy now.  Do you plan to call him Jack?  I think there's probably room for more than one in your circle of friends.  I wouldn't ask your friend, but maybe mention it once you are finally decided.  She doesn't get veto power over your name choice.  DH on the other hand should probably feel comfortable with it.

  • I agree with everyone, if you love it use it. Since it is a popular name your son will probably have a friend or classmate with that name anyways. If you feel too weird about it go ahead and ask your friend.

  • That is such a popular name that I wouldn't worry about using it.  If it was some really rare name I might have more of a weird feeling about it, but it's not family and you don't see each other that often anyway.  I would use it.
