Moving DS in with DD - WWYD (clicky)

Due to being pregnant with #3, we will eventually be moving DS to DD's room for the first year of #3's life.

Their separate nurseries right now are totally girly (pink, green, butterflies) for DD and boy-ish (blue, green, zoo animals) for DS.

I was thinking of keeping it all the same and sort of having the combined room be half-and-half. Literally one half of the room (including 1 curtain) would be pink and the other (and the other curtain) would be blue.

But we have really ugly hard linoleum floors and the area rugs we have are pink and green (DD's) OR blue and green (DS's), neither of which I think would work for this "split room".

Should I

a. buy a new area rug

b. when buying DD's new twin bedding (since she's moving to a 'big kid bed') make it more blue/green, but still girly and use DS's rug (blue/green) for the "neutral" room.

Thoughts?

ETA: We will move the new baby with either DS or DD (whichever is the same sex), when he or she STTN. But I want the baby to have it's own room for when it's born.

Also, we don't plan on finding out the sex of the new baby until it's born so we won't know which room to put it in before hand. And if it's a boy, and is moved with DS, the kids would have to switch rooms anyway because DS's room is much much smaller and the 2 boys would have to move to the bigger room.

  • Me personaly would avoid all these issues by simply finding out the sex so we could make decisions and move on. BUT....Im your case, get your DD some matching bedding. The split room idea is terrible. My friend attempted it and it was a disaster and waste of time and money. Another idea is to not worry about it, put the 2 older in 1 room and just not worry about the decor. Its only for a year.

  • Just try a neutral theme. I think making the half blue and half pink work might be a problem.

  • I would just keep the baby in your room until they are STTN and then move him/her in with DD or DS...would save a lot of trouble and be less of a disruption for your other kids...a new baby is enough of a change.
  • The idea of two potential changes for your older children makes me think that it might be best to find out the sex of the baby this time.  If you aren't wanting to do that (or it's too late) then I would not plan on setting up a nursery until baby is here and you know how to relocate your children.  I'm sorry I don't have better advice but the idea of your daughter moving into your son's room and then your son moving into the nursery a year later if you have a boy is a lot of disruption.  On the same thought, your son having your daughter move into his room and then a year later he gets kicked out of his room so two girls can share seems like you might create "kid drama".

I voted for the 2nd option, but after reading the responses I totally agree with this.

FWIW we're keeping #2 with us until he/she sleeps through the night, but both kids will be sharing a room eventually.  If #2 is a boy I'm going to completely redo the room gender-neutral.
