What's on LO's mattress?

I'm a newbie due in December.

As I'm staring at the list of registry reccommendations from the store I'm getting a little overwhelmed. I've heard again and again not to get too carried away---it's moreless a sales trap. I get that.

But what do I need....

~Sheets (obviously! I'm actually eying the velour ones for winter and have a few cotton ones now)--How many should I have total to make life easier?

~Mattress Pad (good idea!) Again, how many and have any worked well for you?

~Water Proof Pads (lost here!)

~Sheet savers (I kinda get this. They probably make changing sheets easier. But aren't they a bit of a hazard?)

Re: What's on LO's mattress?

  • My mattress has a waterproof cover on it (ie the factory cover is waterproof) and a sheet and that is it.  We have 3 sheets and that seems to be perfect.

I would not bother with any of the other things you mentioned.

I don't find changing the crib sheet that hard.

  • We have it layered with the mattress (waterproof), a sheet, a mattress pad (waterproof), and another sheet. So if she has a big mess in the middle of the night we just pull off a layer and go back to bed.

  • A crib sheet and a tucker sling because LO has reflux. That's it. We own maybe 4 crib sheets. She doesn't make big messes.

  • I have a sheet and that is it (we have three and that is plenty right now).  Our mattress is waterproof, so I just wipe it down if it needs it.  I do have ultimate crib sheets that I use on top of the sheet when my kids get older and the breathable bumper is removed.

  • You might want a waterproof mattress pad, sheet, and the sheet savers (so you don't have to change the sheets as frequently/in the middle of the night)

  • DD's mattress has a waterproof covering.  On top of that, I have a Carter's "Keep Me Dry" quilted fitted crib pad (mainly for extra comfort).  On top of that, her crib sheet.  That's it.  DD has never made such a mess that I've had to change her bedding in the middle of the night.  There are usually just some drool or spit-up stains, and the occasional pee-through (she has always been in a Sleep Sack or swaddle, too).

We have 4 crib sheets, but I've only ever used 2 of them. I use one for a week and then wash and replace.

  • I've heard great things about the ultimate crib sheets.  I put that on over the mattress and realized that I didn't like looking at the sides of the mattress (which is also waterproof) with no sheet.  So I put a sheet on and then the ultimate crib sheet.  It was a pain putting the regular crib sheet on so I am glad I purchased 2 ultimate crib sheets.  If I ever have to change in the middle of the night, I'll just rip the ultimate one off and still have the regular one on there if I don't feel like putting another ultimate sheet on right away.

  • When DD first slept in her crib, we had a mattress pad, one sheet and then the Ultimate Crib Sheet on top.  Frankly, we had a very spit-up prone child, so we needed it all.

Now we just use a mattress pad and sheet.

  • We have 2 waterproof matress pads. 2 flannel sheets for winter and 3 cotton sheets for summer. we seem to have more leakage accidents in summer- maybe because it's hot and I'll often put her down in just a diaper, whereas in winter the pjs soak up a lot of any leakage that may happen.  2 of each is enough, i wouldnt bother with the other stuff.
