April 2011 Moms

Update on Charlotte from Cheryl

From the FB page:

Today was the fastest longest day ever ... they STILL do not know the composition of the cyst but they are getting it studied to *hopefully* find out what type of cyst it is.... it could be a pancreatic pseudocyst, a choleductal cyst, or a fore gut duplication cyst.... most likely the latter but we are hoping for the first lol. They got it and said her insides are an absolute mess, and they can barely see anything because of all the inflammation and scarred tissue.... the mass itself is the size of an adults fist (or larger, that is just what they could actually see) and it is wrapped around organs, embedded in important veins and ducts and is entirely wrapped in blood vessels :o( So there is absolutely no way they could take even part of it out.... Also it was putting pressure on her duodenum and making it kink so that is what was blocking the feedings and causing her to throw up all the time! Poor peanut! So what they did was detach a portion of her small intestine at one end and sew it onto the cyst... that way the cyst just drains through her system and doesn't cause all of this inflammation and problems. Also - once that shrinks it should straighten out the duodenum so it is not obstructed anymore... they also took out her appendix. Not sure why.....they didn't say... but I guess I never have to fear about it bursting and maybe that is even WHY they took it out.

So as you can tell it is still going to be a long road. She was in Surgery until shortly after 4 I think? She had another blood transfusion, her HUGE incision which crosses her entire little belly, a drain tube put in her side, a catheter in her neck and two extra IV's and an arterial line.... so she has something everywhere except ONE foot.... Poor peanut! Tonight she is still intubated, but they should be extubating her tomorrow and setting her up with an epidural.

So she will be in PICU for a while then moving back to the general peds floor. Recovery will take some time and she may need more blood yet, but if all goes well they may be able to try feeding her in a couple weeks.... The biggest fear at this moment (complication wise) is that another one of those veins will pop and fill the cyst with blood again, restarting all the panic.... let's hope not!

It was such a blessing to have all of our family (and even a few friends) around through all of this.... we even got to baptize her last night! I hope to update with glowing reports in the near future.... all fingers are crossed!

Re: Update on Charlotte from Cheryl

  • Can't even imagine what she is going through. To see your baby on a table with an incision like that, iv's, tubes...

I think this is hitting so many April Moms so hard because we've all been doing this at the same time, and all can very realistically imagine our own babies in this situation.

Sending good thoughts to this family. For strength, healing, and good news, soon.

  • Thank you for the update. Even though DS is an April baby, I usually read the 3-6 month board. Just read about Baby Charlotte for the 1st time last night. Our thoughts and prayers are with her and her entire family. We'll be passing the word on for more well wishes!
  • Thank you very much for the update. I am sending them lots of thoughts and prayers for a quick, healthy recovery!
  • My heart broke from baby charlotte and her family, I cannot even imagine the stress they are going through. My thoughts and prayers are with their family. Stay strong baby Charlotte.

April Moms, I think you are all amazing for pulling together to support this beautiful little baby. Seeing yesterday's posts with the red / pink T-shirts for baby charlotte truly warmed my heart.

  • We were in the hospital about a month ago with Julianna because she had had diarrhea for 2 weeks.  They didn't know what was causing the problem. (Most likely a viral infection, we found out later). DH and I were so worried and stressed and we didn't know how to help our little baby that was laying in a hospital crib for 4 days and 3 nights. All the doctors were perplexed as well so that was not comforting.

I have only skimmed the surface of what this mama and baby are going through and i send my prayers to the heavens that this surgery will cure all.  Keep fighting baby Charlotte! And may peace be sent to your mama and dada!
