My morning

So today, through my own doing, I became the hottest topic of conversation in the office.  Mostly because I used the word breast pump and missing in the same sentence in an email to the whole staff.  Let me back up a bit.

Our pumping room is an empty office that Facilities promised me they would eventually fix up.  The only outlet is under the desk, so I leave my AC adapter plugged in and pulled through the hole. I have for weeks without any problems.  I would take it home every evening with my pump but the floor seriously needs to be vacuumed, there are lots of staples all over the place (which have pricked me on my under desk adventures), and my knees are stiff so I opt for the lazy route.

This morning I come in at my usual pumping time to find both my book and the AC Adapter missing.  I panic.  I ask facilities, housecleaning, the prior occupant of the office - no one has taken the adapter.  I researched replacement adapters.  I almost called my husband in tears.  And then I sent an email that apparently made men blush and guffaw and women call me with sympathy. One of my coworkers lent me her pump and my charger miraculously appeared back at my desk.  It was IT.  Apparently any and all cords they feel should belong to them.

I was really annoyed this morning, both at myself and the perpetrator, but my fellow pumping moms in the office made me laugh it off.  Never a dull moment.....

PS  No one returned the book.  That's OK, I wasn't into it and I just bought The Help....

Re: My morning

  • OMG. I would be so furious!

I, too, have made male staff blush. When I have more time, I will share the story of how I left my hands-free pumping bra at our warehouse.

  • Ugh, that's awful. How frustrating. At least someone returned it. Are you the only one who uses that room? I had to tell my 20-something male coworker that I was leaving to go pump last week while we were at a conference because he kept bugging me and joking with me about where I was disappearing to every few hours. Needless to say, that shut him up and he turned bright red. Stick out tongue

  • What an ordeal! I'm glad the adapter came home in the end! And that there are many, many women who can sympathize with you.

  • Nothing made our one male staffer blush more than when he WALKED IN ON ME PUMPING!  My office door was closed (but didn't have a lock) and even though I had a Do Not Disturb sign on the door, he came on in. Needless to say, it never happened again. Wink

Glad you got your adapter back!

  • ClaraJ - that really is my worst fear - not because it's so embarrassing for me, but for the intruder.

I am currently the only woman who uses the room.  We have 4 nursing moms on a staff of 50 but the other 3 all have offices.  The only other woman would doesn't have an office and an infant is FF.

I am so happy to have the adapter back.  It's a huge relief.

  • Oh goodness! I'm glad it all worked out in the end. The Help is so good. You should really enjoy it.

Does your pump take batteries? If so, it may be worth keeping a set at your desk in case the adapter goes missing again. I hope things go smoothly from here on out.
