How long are you bf sessions?

Sam's 7 weeks and only bf for a total of 12-15 minutes. Usually 5 min on one side, 7 on the other. But there are times she will only feed for 5 minutes and then not want to eat for 2-3 hrs. She has gained well (11 lbs 5 oz at 6 weeks) and still has normal amount of wet diapers a day (7-8). I'm just worried that its too short of time spent on the boob. Do you think she has become this efficient at this early age? Pedi was concerned at first when I told her, but then realized her wgt gain and the fact that she doesn't get hungry again for 3 hrs. Just curious to see how long others bf sessions were.

Re: How long are you bf sessions?

  • My DS stopped the marathon nursing sessions around 5-6 weeks, except for growth spurts- then I can't get him off the boob.  Right now, he usually eats for about 5-7 minutes on one boob and then is good for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.  I know its hard, but as long as he's gaining weight and peeing, you're doing great!

  • love your BTs!

that seems about right.  kat was always a one-sider, now she only does both sides during our nursing sessions at daycare (my lunch break).  the marathons stopped around 6-7 weeks.

  • 10 to 15 minutes.
  • My DS is currently a marathon feeder, however I think your situation sounds fine and I'm actually jealous!  Do you ever pump?  I only ask because I get like 90% of my milk in the first 5 minutes, so if your DC eats for only 5 minutes, they are probably getting nearly all your milk.

  • DD was doing 15 minute feedings for the first few weeks then she went to just eating 5 minutes on each side.  She has no issues gaining weight.

IAs long as  your DC is gaining weight, you shouldn't worry about it!

  • Whoa. DS eats for 45 min to an hour if I let him. I've been pulling him off after about 45 lately. I guess that's marathon feeding? Hopefully he goes back to shorter feedings soon.
