D.C. Area Babies

s/o-Arlington daycare rec?

DH and I won't actually need daycare for our (soon-to-be) baby until January 2010 when I go back to work after school is over. And DH is freaked out because he is convinced we should have put our names down on a waiting list the day we found out I was pregnant and now we're way behind ;-) I feel a little more optimistic that we'll be able to figure out something in the next year and 2 months!

Anyway, can anyone recommend a daycare center (in-home or regular) in Arlington/Falls Church?

  • I understand where your DH is coming from, it not impossible, but if you really want to get into a center, i would definitely sign up now.  There were a few places who flat out said not to bother trying to get on thier list, it was just too long for infants.  We've been on lists since April/May timeframe and dont expect to get into any of the centers.  We are on waits at Rosslyn Childrens Center, Clarendon Baptist, and somewhere else I am forgetting at the moment.

I looked into Infant-Toddler - right now they have only 2 people that would potentially have openings for us in Feb, but last week I happened to find a woman who was referred to me through a neighbor and I think we are going to go with her.

I say its never too early!

  • you won't have as much of a problem since your baby won't be an infant by then, but almost 1, right? i think at that age they move to a different room (at a center, at an in-home, you won't have a problem finding a spot at all) and there tends to be more availability (for a variety of reasons - moms had baby #2 and became SAHM, fewer hands needed for older babies/children).

there are major differences between center and in-home care and you should work out the pros/cons for your family before you start looking at either. have you done the initial state certified/licensed provider search yet? on VA's website, you can view a list of certified providers - that's where we began. i eliminated those that were beyond my geographic requirements and started calling. I could eliminate 75% based on the way the phone was answered. i narrowed down to a dozen or so and researched them for violations. i also requested references from each. i visited the top three centers and the top three in-home sites (we still were undecided which we'd prefer). i had an overwhelming sense that one was the best for my family and we couldn't be happier with our choice. i'd recommend them, but they are in alexandria and certainly will not hold a spot for 14 months!
