Random: CD moms---powder vs. liquid gel detergent?

I'm just about to buy Charlie's Soap as my first try in the whole CD business. Any thoughts on powdered soap vs. liquid gel soap? Domestic goddess, I am not. Tongue Tied

Re: Random: CD moms---powder vs. liquid gel detergent?

  • I use the powdered Charlie's on all my clothes, so I'm just going to use it on the diapers, too.  It seems less messy than the liquid to me, that's the only reason chose it over the liquid.

  • I haven't heard the best about Charlie's Soap or Sensi-clean. I've heard of both of them giving chemical burns. I am probably going to try Rockin' Green. I've heard great things about it and the Bum Genius detergent.

  • I'm using the Dropps Free & Clear liquid/gel packets. They are safe to use on CDs and you can buy them at Target--26 packets in a bag for $7. You use 1 packet per load. We have really hard water, and I hear they work well in hard water. I've only used them to prep my diapers so far, so I can't comment on effectiveness yet!

    Good luck!

Really? I hadn't heard that! I narrowed down to 2 or 3 based on reviews and being good with HE washers. I'll re-check my work I suppose . . .

I've had the same issue with HE washers.  Check out the Cloth 101 on Abby's Lane . I've met these ladies in person and met some customers who have dealt with the burns first hand and I wouldn't touch Charlie's because of it.

  • I'd love to hear about the Dropps. We have really hard water as well. My plan was to use Rockin Green's Hard Rock (didja know you can buy samples on their website for cheap? a sample gives you 2-4 loads).

I've heard the same about Charlie's and chemical burns.

  • I haven't heard about the chemical burns.  I started using Charlie's after reading a recommendation at Alphamom.com.  One of the writers there uses it on CD for all three of her kids, including one that has eczema.

  • Okay, so now I'm looking at Rockin' Green. What about the scents? Is it better to be unscented?

  • I make my own detergent and it's a powder.  I plan to use that on the CDs.  I've heard excellent things about Bum Genius powder.  I've got a sample of that I want to try.

My detergent recipe is: one cup borax, one cup, washing soda, 1/2 cup oxyclean, 1 bar of mild soap finely grated (I use Ivory).

I love it.  I've been using it for 3 months and have had great results.

I am seconding or maybe thirding the whole Charlie's Soap and chemical burns thing. I have read about it numerous times on various cd sites as well as some of the ladies over on the cd will mention the same thing too.

Rockin' Green is a favorite among many and there is no concensus on whether scented is better than unscented...its pretty much each persons preference. The only thing about RG is just to make sure you choose the correct type for your particular water...Soft, Classic or Hard

  • Oh and another recommendation is the Original Tide powder...many love it and swear by it. Make sure not to mistakenly get the Tide Ultra and def powder over the liquid...

I've been making mine using the above combo as well (except I use Fels as my soap) and it works great on our clothes. It is really cheap and easy to do. My SO is a chef so I was his clothes on their own and add more Oxy and borax to cut the grease.

I've also heard great stuff about rockin green.

  • I CD'd dd#1 and I would stay away from Rockin' Green if I were you. As soon as I switched to it, my dd developed a horrible rash and it was a bi*ch to clear up. Thankfully she potty trained soon after...

I am giving liquid Planet a try this time around. Bought it off of Amazon and am going to prep my diapers w/ it this weekend! :)
