Organized people - what do you do with leftover party supplies?

I have several boxes in my basement with leftovers from birthday parties.  Cowboy hats, stickers, favors, favor bags, colored napkins and plastic utensils.  As for custom-mad items, like favor tags, I am keeping a few as mementoes.  What do I do with the rest of the stuff?  My husband is a hoarder - keeps everything "just in case."  I can't stand clutter and our basement storage is reaching full capacity.

What do you do with this stuff?

Thanks :)

  • I keep a tupperware tub of misc party supplies and use them when my family or friends have a g2g - like a BBQ or whatever.  It's pretty funny to use a mixmatch of stuff at random times.   Last christmas, we used Little Einstein napkins as cocktail napkins when the neighbors stopped by.   Classy? no.  But the kids thought it was funny.

Hats and stickers would be put into DS's art drawers to be used for misc. projects.

  • I keep the favors to send into school for holidays, parties, etc.  You can give the paper goods to the PTA to use for parties and school funtions.  I bet they'd love that.  Sometimes I do pull stuff out when I entertain at home if it's not a kid theme (e.g. napkins with balloons on them vs. Cowboys).  But, they're not bad to pull out when you have kids over either.  They love kid themed stuff.

  • I just keep it all in a big bin in my pantry (I have bins for paper products, snacks, plastic bags from the grocery store that I use to bag dog poop, etc) and use them when I don't feel like doing dishes.  Anytime we have a playdate here, or we are eating at our picnic table in the backyard, Friday night :)  We have stuff from birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, 4th of July...

  • I put each kid theme into a large ziploc and they all go into a box. I've used leftover plates and napkins to send school to celebrate bdays at school or we'll use them at home when we have the kids eat separately from us (like on date night). They think it is special and it's less clean up on a night I'm trying to get ready.
  • I have thrown a lot of it away, but I'm selling a crap ton of that kind of stuff at a yard sale this weekend.  I swear, I've never been to a yard sale, but after going through my stuff in the past week, I'm so excited about the idea of getting rid of this stuff and not just throwing it away.

A lot of the extra little favors and stuff, I keep and give them to my kid clients after their sessions.

  • I use the small plates to take treats to my neighbors, they don't care if their cookies come on a birthday plate (I hope).

I like the idea of giving the toy stuff to the school, other than that I would junk everything.

  • Extra plates, napkins, and that stuff gets used throughout the year when we have a need for paper plates.  I usually serve dessert on them when we have people over because the dishwasher is full from all the other dishes.

Things like cowboy hats, or princess tiaras, or "costume-y" kind of things I put in the kids' dress up trunk (they have all kinds of dress up clothes in a HUGE old suitcase) for them to play with.  when they get trashed (which they do quickly) I toss 'em.  for things like favors, bags, napkins and utensils, I store them and re-use them.  We had a "summer party" one year just for the fun of it and we used all the different colored plates/utensils/napkins because they were all bright/rainbow kind of colors.  It was fabulous.  For the favors and bags, I re-use leftovers.  If we had tonka trucks in the favor bags this year, and i have some left over, they get stuck in next year's bags.

  • I keep the extra napkins, paper plates, plastic utensils, and so forth  in a cabinet in the basements and save them for picnics, camping, potlucks, etc.

Stickers and hats would go straight to the costume box and put into the kids' art supply area. I would also try really hard to send extra stuff like that home with kids so that I didn't have much of it left!
