Indy Mamas - Recommend Your Daycare

If your child(ren) go to daycare, where do they go?  What do you like / dislike?

If you stay home, what prompted that decision?  Do you feel like you are financially strained or missing out on professional opportunities?

My husband and I live downtown.  He works in Plainfield and I work in Fishers, so we've got quite a big range of places we could take a little one for daycare...although I'm contemplating just staying home because my measly paycheck would hardly pay for the cost.

Re: Indy Mamas - Recommend Your Daycare

  • We also live downtown; my husband works downtown and I work downtown some of the time. We take our kids to Shalom Daycare at Robert's Park United Methodist Church. We have been pretty happy with it, but we are fairly low-maintenance. Basically we are happy as long as the kids are happy and healthy, which they are. Jocelyn has learned more than I expected being at a pretty "low-tech" center (it's in a historic church, and the classrooms reflect that). She was a prolific signer before she could speak and she is learns new things everyday. I totally credit daycare with potty training her (in the process), teaching her things like drinking from a cup without a lid, learning her alphabet, colors, etc. The infant room is a bunch of older ladies sitting around holding babies, which is perfect for us. I sometimes get annoyed if they give bottles too soon or when Connor has supposedly had his 3rd blowout in a row, but I think all of that is par for the course with any daycare. I know the "teachers" have way more experience with kids than I do so I really look to them for advice and pointers. My husband is an attorney and many of his colleagues take their kids to Shalom, so that made us feel more comfortable initially. Plus it is definitely on the inexpensive side. I think we paid around $160-180 for one child, $300 for two per week. So, overall we are happy and I would recommend Shalom if you don't require fancy accomodations. I've also heard good things about Day Nursery over by Methodist. Good luck!

  • Thanks for the recommendation!  There's just so many options that it's hard to know where to begin.  $160-$180 is much more affordable than some of the others I've looked at.

  • My Daughter goes to Children of America on Pendleton Pike and Sunnyside.  I like it because they are so organized.  They have a good curriculium and Summer camp, which ends this week.  My daughter loves it because they go on field trips during summer camp.  Right now with the economy being so bad you can pretty much negotiate the price of day care.  Tell them how much you can pay and most places will work with you.  Good luck!!
