1st Trimester

Feeling FAT!

I am almost 7 weeks along, and over the moon about this pregnancy, but I am feeling super down on myself! I found out about 2 weeks ago that we were expecting, and I immediately tried to start eating better and more frequently (my pre-pregnancy diet was pretty poor). I've put on 3 pounds in 2 weeks, which I know when I type it out it sounds ridiculous, but I am having a really hard time accepting it. I had a miscarriage last year and I think I am scared to gain weight too early and lose this one as well. My baby's health is my number one priority, but is anyone else struggling with this? How much weight should I be gaining per week at this point? Any tips on how to feel better? I have also been struggling with setting up a healthy eating agenda, does anyone know of any online tools or websites that can help with this?

Re: Feeling FAT!

  • Right now you can pretty much be eating how you were eating before.  You don't need to start gaining weight until 2nd trimester.  I would worry right now about just eating balanced.  Make sure to get enough dairy and fruits and veggies.  You'll be fine!  Babies turn out fine even in 3rd world countries where they can't eat enough.  A miscarriage has nothing to do with what you're doing.  It just happens and can't be prevented.

  • Someone on here shared the babyfit.com site. It is great for entering foods and it also gives you some great ideas for healthy meals. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about feeling fat just as long as you are eating healthy (most of the time at least :)) and getting exercise.

  • Hey girlie,

I too am having some issues with the "fat feeling" and I'm only 6 weeks!  My sister has a 10 month old and I actually talked to her today about it because I could barely get my belt done and she said it's totally normal.  You retain a lot of water and just bloating early on so it's nothing to worry about.  She also said that I can either worry about it or just say screw it and enjoy your pregnancy!!!  Well that's exactly what I plan to do!  I'm eating right and I'm walking and I plan to keep it up but if I gain weight early or whatever I'm just going to smile and say this is one of the few times in my life I can do it and no one can say anything because I'm PREGNANT!!!!  :)  Hope that helped!

  • One thing I learned about pregnancy the last go-round was that your body is going to do whatever the heck it wants to in regards to weight gain/loss.  I gained weight pretty rapidly in the 2nd trimester, but it stabilized in the 3rd trimester.  I ate and exercised the exact same both trimesters.

As the previous poster said, just enjoy your pregnancy.  When your gain is more than what's recommended, of course you should consult your Dr., but a few lbs. here and there are to be expected (if you're an average weight starting out).   Pregnancy is the one time in life we can actually gain weight and not get the side-eye.  ;)

  • Gaining weight right now is not going to cause a m/c.  Most happen because something is wrong with the baby and there is nothing you could have done to prevent it.

Eating healthier is good but eating more is unnecessary.  You don't really need extra calories in the first tri.

  • 3 lbs = bloat.  Don't worry about it-the bloat will go away.  Just eat well and do your best.  I gained over 55 lbs with my first pregnancy and peeled 50 of it off within 6 months of having my LO.  Your body does what it needs to and it really does know best-thanks to my massive weight gain I had a ton of milk which helped greatly when BFing.

All of this! And I think they say you only need to gain a few lbs in 1st tri.

  • YES YES YES-me too! I talk about it daily-its not good. I am typically 106 pds at 5'5, I am now 112 and almost 9 wks. I feel HUGE. It doesnt help (and yes totally my fault) that I have been incorporating foods I would norm never eat daily-ice cream, chips, etc. Normally I am very strict with my diet, but fresh veggies etc turn me off-though I am forcing them down. I still work out 5/6 days a wk and will continue to till my dr says no more. The little baby is number 1 and I just keep saying to my hub I am going to work my butt off again after the baby is born, and maybe get a mini mom makeover :)

  • I think that as long as you eat healthy stuff and still gain weight that's fine. It must just mean that your body needed the extra padding. Or it's bloat... :) which means there is nothing you can do about it...

I feel the 1st is the case with me. When I was about 6 weeks prego I started feeling RAVENOUS all the time, I mean RAVENOUS. I had to eat like every hour. At the same time I developed this crazy aversion to chololate, cookies and any kind of sweets. The appetite stopped but the aversion is still going on at 11w. This is so unlike me - Chocolate used to be a full on food group for me. I had to have chocolate every day. Thank goodness I am normally pretty thin and have aweome metabolism otherwise I would be very very large...

Anywho, since I got this killer appetite, I've been craving fruit and veg like crazy. I don't think I've eaten this much fruit and such a variety as now ever before in my life. I have to have it for breakfast lunch and dinner (and snacks). Just some crazy thing my body needs I guess.

And even though I've gained 4lbs at this point I am not sweating it. It's not like I could have starved myself or gone on a diet... If I did not eat I felt nauseous and weak. What was I supposed to do...

Just relax, eat some yogurt and try fruits you normally would not go for and see if it works. Good luck!!
