Good morning!
It's been a while since I've been on this board, DH and I have struggled with my IF for years and we had made the decision to begin researching adoption about 6 months ago. History: I had hyperthyroidism which triggered my premature ovarian failure, I also have uterine fibroids, had surgery in April 2008 to remove three large ones. My first RE released me, but convinced he just was releasing me because he wouldn't see past my high FSH levels due to my thyroid (which had decreased after I started getting treated), I went to a second RE. Well that one was AWFUL, and we did only one cycle with her and escaped. Then I started going to a 3rd RE last November and while we liked her, I just wasn't responding to the meds. My best option is IVF, but my insurance doesn't cover it, so rather than incur the expense, we made the decision to save our money and spend it on an adoption.
Well, while researching adoption, someone told me about a clinical trial at New Hope Fertility Clinic in NYC. I did the online pre-application on Sunday. Heard back from them on Monday, filled out the lengthy application online - nervous that I'd be eliminated from consideration because of my thyroid - I got through the second application. They emailed me again later on Monday about setting up an initial visit. I'm calling today to see when we can make the appointment with them.
Has anyone gotten involved in this clinical trial? I would really appreciate, even if you only went through the initial visit with them, any advice you can give me.
Thanks!
Jen
Re: Hello again (it's been a while), and question about New Hope Fert. Center (NY)
Hi -- I don't know anything about the trial, I'm afraid, but I'm interested in your point about hyperthyroidism and ovarian failure. I was extremely hyperthyroid for about 2 months of last spring (and probably for a bit before that), thanks to Graves' disease, and I've wondered if that has had something to do with my egg quality. Neither my endocrinologist nor my two REs have thought that it did/does (I've asked). Where are you getting your info about the link between the two?
I hope the clinical trial works out. I have no experience with your issues but a former nestie went to New Hope and got her BFP.

It's been a long journey. TTC since 9/06. multiple IUI's and IVF's and 4 m/c's. IVF#3 = BFP, twins, induced at 34w6d due to baby b passing away (no explanation). Delivered on 35w1d, Baby A - baby girl, and Baby B - baby boy, our little angel.

Like you, I did research to see if there was any correlation between the premature ovarian failure, and hyperthyroidism. I found nothing online, nothing on WebM, I also asked my first RE and he said no, perhaps but likely no there was no correlation between the two.
In February, when I went for my annual appointment with my endocrinologist, I mentioned to her that my first RE dropped me and I wasn't responding to the newest RE treatments. She asked me about why my first RE dropped me, and asked me what was the prognosis according to my first RE. I told her premature ovarian failure, and she looked down and said, Oh Jen I'm so sorry. I said what, what's wrong? She said it is due to your Graves Disease, there is a correlation between the two. I hated hearing this, but you know what - at least I learned that although I'm "broken" now, it wasn't born this way, it's something that simply happened as a result of my extreme hyperthyroidism.
It's probably not much help, but it was my endocrinologist who told me that one caused the other.
