Tom's Deodorant

I remember some of you recommending this a few weeks back.  I found some at Wal-Mart and decided to get it because it didn't have aluminum in it.  Now I am getting rashes/burns under my arms!  It's around the edges of where I put the deodorant.  Has this happened to anyone else?  I guess I'll have to switch back to my aluminum-filled ones.

Re: Tom's Deodorant

  • My DH got a horrible rash after using his old deodorant (Old Spice) after a week of using Tom's.  I think in his case, it was from using something with alcohol/other harsh stuff in it after stopping.

Are you using a scented one?  Maybe you are having a reaction to the fragrance and the fragrance-free one would better?  Either way, I'm sorry you are having a bad reaction!

  • YES! My armpits are PEELING from this deodorant! I think I am allergic to something in it...I literally felt like my armpits were on fire at Ikea the other day, and I had to run to the bathroom to soap them up and get the deodorant off.

I am trying the crystal deodorant (I hate aluminum ones because they leave that film gunk under my arms), I can't think of the name off the top of my head. It's right near the Tom's stuff, it's in a clear purple package and the crystal looks like dry salt. You wet it and put it under your arms, and apparently it's the best thing out there. Hopefully it doesn't burn my pits.
  • I had to stop using Tom's because of a rash under my arms as well.  I happened to have a dermatologist appointment at about the same time for something else, and he said it was actually pretty common.  I switched back to the good old deodorant/antiperspirant that I always had, and no more rash.  Too bad, because I like the idea of an all natural deodorant, but I won't try one again.

  • Weird; I have a stick of the Green Tea Extract one and it didn't give me a rash at all. But... it also wasn't terribly effective for me. :-/ I need an antiperspirant as well, I guess!

Wrt the aluminum ones, if it's a concern for you, there wasn't a link between use of aluminum-containing deodorants and Alzheimer's according to this study...

Quote: "For all antiperspirant/deodorant use, regardless of aluminum content, there was no association with [Alzheimer's Disorder]".

  • Me too! I makes my armpits burn so bad! It's especially bad if I am wearing a tank top or something where my armpit is constantly rubbing on itself. I liked the natural idea as well, but the burning is not worth it!

  • I'm sorry some of you are suffering too but I'm glad I'm not the only one!  I might try that crystal kind, thanks!  Also, I didn't know about the correlation between that and Alzheimer's, but I'm glad to know it's not related, because Alzheimer's runs in my family.  And I am using scented--the lavender one.

  • I didn't get a rash but I did smell terrible (worse than no deoderant, I swear) for the week I used it. I went back to Dove. It has aluminum, but my kid came out perfectly healthy!

  • I stared using Tom's deodorant a while back to avoid all the bad stuff in regular deodorants, plus I love smell of Tom's fresh apricot. It sort of worked before I was pregnant, but now I just smell really bad when I use it. Pregnancy must make me sweat more (I'm hot all the time plus I live in Tucson AZ) because the Tom's is not working at all, maybe making me smell worse. I've actually been using my husband's deodorant, which is a major improvement (except that now I smell like "cool metal.") I'm debating going back to the commercial women's stuff.
