Toxic songs/albums...

....since we're talking about music today, what are your "toxic" songs or albums? By "toxic," I mean a song or album that immediately puts you in a bad/sad place. My friend and I recently discussed how REM's "Nightswimming" is an immediate downer, and I'd also add anything from the Counting Crows' second album.

Clearly, I was a teenager in the mid/late 90's.

Dude, also not a song or album, but I tried to rewatch My So Called Life at the beginning of this summer....bad idea. Not only did it make me super anxious, but the one I really felt sorry for was Angela's mom.

Anything done by Dave Matthews instantly puts me into a fit of anger and rage. This stems back to college when we would have parties and the place would be packed shoulder to shoulder with everyone dancing and drinking. Then one of our friends who didn't like the dance music would put on DMB and everyone would almost instantly leave the party and go to the bar. We would go from about 50 people to 7-10 people. We even tried hiding the stereo so this wouldn't happen but they would find it. This happened a fewl times so we stopped having parties all together.

Seriously, I think that Jordan Catalano was the model for many, many stupid crushes until I was in my early 20's. That boy was DAMAGED GOODS. In fact, he COULDN'T READ, much less communicate with Angela! Legit, that was my MO---boys that were cute that I could "fix/help".

I only dated scruffy guys with hair that fell in their eyes and wore flannel shirts. Jordan Catalano was the hottest guy on tv, at that time.

Do you guys remember that song "Butterfly"? It was like "you're my butterfly, sugar baby, come my lady, come come my lady", something like that. I am confident that song is the worst song ever written in the history of recorded music. IMO, of course.

Anything by Soul Coughing/Mike Doughty. My ex-hubby was a huge fan, and played it constantly. It's kind of a shame, because it's good music, but it now makes me feel stabby. That and bicyclists. Ex was a pro bike racer and I haven't quite gotten over the urge to run them over with my car...I won't because I know they are just innocent athletes...but I have burned a few cycling magazines and/or books by Lance Armstrong.

Does anybody remember that horrible song "mambo number 5"? That song was on heavy rotation all over the place when I was in a screwed up relationship with a guy much older than me...the manwhore -ness of that song still makes me cringe, especially because of the association.

I was going to say Fiona Apple! When I was in a bad mood, I'd always put that CD in to magnify it and be angsty. Haven't listened to her in years though.

Fiona Apple - anything by her makes me want to crawl in the fetal position. Oh, and as much as I heart Tori Amos' Little Earthquakes album, the songs do put me in a foul mood because they were all about her rape.

OMG now I need to break out the "My So Called Life" DVD's... my favorite show!! And Sarah Maclachlan's "Angel" makes my sob instantly and just the first few notes can ruin my day...
