....since we're talking about music today, what are your "toxic" songs or albums? By "toxic," I mean a song or album that immediately puts you in a bad/sad place. My friend and I recently discussed how REM's "Nightswimming" is an immediate downer, and I'd also add anything from the Counting Crows' second album.
Clearly, I was a teenager in the mid/late 90's.
Re: Toxic songs/albums...
Dude, also not a song or album, but I tried to rewatch My So Called Life at the beginning of this summer....bad idea. Not only did it make me super anxious, but the one I really felt sorry for was Angela's mom.
<------old now
OH GOD! I forgot ALL ABOUT THIS.
"Your loooove is better thaaan ice creaaaam....."
OMG the dirty things I wanted to do to Jared Leto...was his name Jordan Catalano?? Yep just double checked!
Anything by Sarah McLoclan puts me on suicide watch...
Seriously, I think that Jordan Catalano was the model for many, many stupid crushes until I was in my early 20's. That boy was DAMAGED GOODS. In fact, he COULDN'T READ, much less communicate with Angela! Legit, that was my MO---boys that were cute that I could "fix/help".
Thanks a lot, MSCL!
amen to this.
I think we dated the same guys!
I only dated scruffy guys with hair that fell in their eyes and wore flannel shirts. Jordan Catalano was the hottest guy on tv, at that time.
Do you guys remember that song "Butterfly"? It was like "you're my butterfly, sugar baby, come my lady, come come my lady", something like that. I am confident that song is the worst song ever written in the history of recorded music. IMO, of course.
The song Sullen Girl by Fiona Apple makes me want to off myself.
And there's too much going on
But it's calm under the waves, in the blue of my oblivion
Under the waves in the blue of my oblivion
Is that why they call me a sullen girl, sullen girl
They don't know I used to sail the deep and tranquil sea
But he washed me ashore and he took my pearl
And left an empty shell of me
And I totally agree. Jared Leto was a smoking hottie. It makes me sad because every since MSCL it seems like he's been trying to make himself ugly.
Does anybody remember that horrible song "mambo number 5"? That song was on heavy rotation all over the place when I was in a screwed up relationship with a guy much older than me...the manwhore -ness of that song still makes me cringe, especially because of the association.
I was going to say Fiona Apple! When I was in a bad mood, I'd always put that CD in to magnify it and be angsty. Haven't listened to her in years though.
Oh man. Fiona Apple! I can't even go there!
Fiona Apple - anything by her makes me want to crawl in the fetal position. Oh, and as much as I heart Tori Amos' Little Earthquakes album, the songs do put me in a foul mood because they were all about her rape.
This.
