We're going to hire someone to come in and help with Louie on Thursdays. Right now I'm leaning towards hiring a college kid since I'll be just a room away working, but I'm nervous after hearing all these horror stories.
Where did you find your nanny? How much do you pay and is it a flat rate or hourly? Do you have any tips for me? And how do you figure out nanny taxes?
TIA
Re: Aggie or others who have hired a nanny
I was a nanny in college. Someone posted a flyer near the Early Childhood Education classes, and a few of us responded. I think that'd be a good start. Or scope out local preschools. Send them a letter or notice asking if any of their teachers are interested in a part-time nanny position to please contact you. When I worked at a pre-k it was only M,W,F because I had the 3-day per week group, and someone else was there for 5 days. So sometimes I nannied or babysat on my off days. Or I just subbed at other preschools.
I don't know how taxes and all of that work, but I often just was paid cash or by check but under the table when it was just so infrequent.
We really lucked out with our nanny. We hired a friend of the family who is a college student and part-time nanny. She normally charges $11 - $16/hour depending on the age of the child and we are paying her $5/hour plus paying her income taxes and giving her gas money. You don't have to pay income taxes for your nanny; you could just give him/her a 1099 at the end of the year that is a statement of earnings and they would have to report and pay taxes. We are doing it as a favor since she is charging us so little.
We also hired a family friend who is a college student. It is challenging at times because of her schedule but totally worth it to have someone come to our house and watch Hannah.
We pay her by the week and in cash w/ a receipt. I pay her for 5 days a week even when she is off a day or two. I also give her two weeks of paid vacation a year. We provide food and she has to clean up after herself in the kitchen and pick up after DD. She has been with us since H was 7 weeks old and its working really well.
This is totally unrelated, but my (real) name is also Courtney T. and every time I see you post, I'm like, "Biitch stole my name!" And then I remember that there are more Courtney T.s in the world then me. I only ever knew one other Courtney growing up but I was the only Courtney T.
