Babies: 6 - 9 Months

XP Bfing and Daycare(long)

I figured I'd post on my home board too. Can't hurt!  Already posted on Working Moms and BF boards! Smile

I EBF but I have to return to work Monday.  DS started daycare last Wed. to get used to it before I went back full time.  We had been inconsistent about offering the bottle since I was a SAHM and able to nurse.  Now he won't take one.  The DCP tried and got him to take 2oz the first day(in 8hrs) but since then he won't take anything from the bottle when she offers it.

She told me the second day that she just ended up mixing 2oz with each of his solid meals he ate that day and mixing a little extra with some rice cereal later in the day.  So he took in 4oz in a 8hr day plus 2 solid meals.

The third day(Friday) he again refused the bottle and she was able to spoon feed him 2oz on two different occasions and also his solids.(again 4oz all day)

I told her I would like her to keep trying with the bottle bc I'm worried that 4oz of BM isn't enough in a 8hr period.   I have tried to get him used to a sippy cup but he doesn't get much out of it either.  I think he isn't sure how it is supposed to work.

Lastly, I'm supposed to go out of town overnight for one night in 2 weeks (I'm MOH in a wedding in Vegas and DH refuses to take DS to Vegas) and my mom and aunt were going to watch DS.  Now I'm worried.  I don't want them to have to spoon feed him for 24hrs.

Help!  Any advice would be great!

  • Which sippy have you tried?

My baby won't take a bottle either. I'm an EBF SAHM too and I was honestly just too lazy to teach him to use a bottle or get him used to one. Now he won't take it at all, but he will drink from a straw sippy. The one that works best for us was the "Bot" cup by Zo-li.

     Good luck!

We've tried the munchkin sippy and straw sippy but I think they were too hard bc they r spill proof. 1hr on phone

  • You might want to try this one. It isn't spill proof, and I wasn't looking for that. imo, babies will spill and that's how they learn as toddlers. You know? Anyway, this straw is made of silicone. It's super soft and easy to suck from. What I like about it is that the straw has a wight on the bottom so that the straw is always in the liquid no matter how LO tips the cup.

  • What types of bottles have you tried?  We used the breastflow ones at first and our LO liked them because they are supposedly the most like the breast.  You might try one if you haven't already.  Now we use the medela kind and he does fine with those.  Good luck!  Hopefully, he will get hungry enough to take the bottle!

  • Could be reverse cycling... is your LO nursing more at night to make up for it?

e stopped giving a bottle for a while too, and then J seemed to forget how to drink from it. We have been giving one now when he wakes at around 10 to eat, he is slowly getting used to it again.

What flow nipples are you using? We increased ours... at this point your LO is probably a much more efficient nurser than when he was little, so it makes sense to me to make the bottle faster too... (there is always the chance of your LO developing a preference, but at this point I think that is unlikely.)

  • Random thought but how are they positioning your DS to feed him the bottle.  My dd will only take a bottle if she is sitting up facing away from whoever is feeding her.  (her head ends up leaning against the middle of dh's chest and she watches tv or whatever else is going on around her)  If anyone tries to cradle her while they give her a bottle she wont touch it at all she will just dig at the persons shirt looking for food.

  • Sorry to post and run earlier, had tons of errands to do.  We've tried breastflow, tommee tippee, medela, and nuk.  He has taken the nuk and tippee maybe once each.  DH has tried positioning him all different ways, not sure about the DCP.  I went aHead and ordered that sippy cup so maybe we'll get lucky there.  He isn't bursing all that much more at night, but then again he's always been an every 2hrs little guy.  I'm mostly worried bc he's only 8% for weight already...

  • Have you tried latex nipples instead of silicone?  My DD refused all of the silicone nipples but took right to the latex ones.  We used the Playtex brand.  Latex is a lot softer and more flexible so it might do the trick.  Good luck!

  • the lactation consultants where I live recommend playtex bottles and if those don't work trying an open cup.  My baby also refuses a bottle (from everyone but our daycare provider so I got lucky there) but I haven't tried these methods yet.  Good luck!
