RP: Paleo

Hi ladies. DH and I are in our 2nd cycle of TTC our first. I posted this on TTGP but I thought I may get more responses here.

Does anyone else in here eat Paleo? I have 1 day left of Couch to 5K and I weighed myself on Tuesday. It is the first time I've stepped on a scale since starting and I haven't lost any weight. It was disappointing so I decided to try something else in addition to running.

DH just did the 30 day Paleo challenge and he lost 12 pounds in a month. He'll even admit he was not religious about it and had a few cheat days. It's not even just about the weight, it's also supposed to give you more energy, get rid of chronic pain, etc.

Just curious to see if anyone else in here does it or has heard of it.

Re: RP: Paleo

  • I eat Paleo...well, I should admit "modified Paleo".  I eat dairy (full fat), usually cottage cheese or plain Greek yogurt for breakfast with fruit in it.  And when I was pg (and even now), I still occasionally cheat with cheese & crackers for a snack, or ice cream for dessert, and MH couldn't give up beer. But for the most part, MH & I have been grain, sugar and processed-food free for the last 2 years.

I was already thin and worked out very regularly, so I didn't see a change in my weight, but MH dropped 20lbs and now that he is a Crossfit fanatic, he is by far in the best shape of his life at 33 years old...even more so than when we first started dating in college and he was at the gym a lot.

I COMPLETELY endorse the Paleo diet!  Neither of us has had so much as a 24 hour headcold since switching diets.  We have great energy, sleep well, no more allergies, skin looks great, and we can do the grueling Crossfit workouts and recover from those well.  I used to eat the standard 'diet' thinking I was super healthy - no fat, lots of whole grains, pastas & veggies with light sauces, fat-free salad dressings...I was basically eating 70% carbs before ("healthy" ones, per the FDA) and low calorie.  But I would be STARVING if I didn't eat every 2-3 hours, and would get shaky from low blood sugar if I skipped a snack or meal.

Now I don't think twice about calories or fat - I just stick to the Paleo approved foods and eat til I get full.  I can't say it helped me conceive (still took us 5 months, but we're in our early 30s and timing was never great), but I am certain it helped my pregnancy.  I'm a FTM and gained 24lbs, worked out up until the week before I delivered, had a fairly easy 7hr L&D with 3 stitches (the epidural helped!), and 9 days later I've lost all but about 4lbs (not trying to lose weight, but I am BF) and already out walking and can't wait to get cleared to start Crossfit again.  LO has eaten like a champ since birth, and sleeping decent for a newborn.

Check out marksdailyapple.com - its a great way to ease into Paleo, and his blog is fantastic, interesting and inspiring.  Also check out Crossfitmom when you get pg...I followed it until about 7.5 months in, but that's only b/c I got a couple of pg-induced inguinal hernias so I couldn't lift heavy weights anymore.

  • It seems like an overall healthy, clean diet so as long as you are eating enough calories while pg then it seems like a very good choice, actually.

I wish I had the willpower but I really love sugar and BFing has not helped with this!

  • I eat mostly modified paleo, modified in that like PP, I include some full-fat dairy.

There's really no remotely credible way to argue that basing one's diet around meat, vegetables, and some fruits and nuts is unhealthy. I've had some trouble staying as strict as I'd like to be in first tri because meat isn't very appetizing right now, but on a normal day I get about 8 servings of vegetables  - way more than anyone else I know.

  • I just wanted to add that there are a lot of great books out there on Paleo. The Paleo Solution by Rob Wolff, The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sission are a couple of good ones. Sarah Fragoso just came out with a book called Everyday Paleo that has a lot of great recipes in it (she also has a website everydaypaleo.com). GL!

  • MH and I eat Paleo but like the PP we also eat dairy. If you're just going to do it to lose weight, make sure you eat lower fat meat when you add more grains in. I don't plan on never going back to eating grains. I have tons more energy and I feel stronger when I work out than I ever did before. MH and I still have "cheat" meals (we found that if we have cheat meals we do better on our diets) once a week. There's a ton of websites out there too. Everdaypaleo.com is a good one and my favorite is practicalpaleoliving.com. It has a list of things to do to get started. GL
