Babies: 6 - 9 Months

confused about chewing food

so this is probably a dumb question, but if I have my son try some chicken or beef...very tiny bits, but he only has his bottom 2 teeth, how does he chew it?  just with his gums?  I'm a little nervous that he could choke.  When should I give him things other than purees?  He is 6.5 months now

Re: confused about chewing food

  • Baby gums are hard.  They can gum almost anything (within reason - a raw carrot or very tough meat would be difficult).  Babies have a more sensitive gag reflex than adults.  They will gag if they can't handle what they're eating.  DS is 13 months and only has his 4 front teeth, but eats all the same meals I do.

  • We're doing BLW, so we give LO meats. I'll give him a piece (ie of grilled chicken) that's about the size of my finger so he can hold it himself and chew on the end. He probably doesn't actually ingest much, but it's just practice.

  • When DS1 was a baby I would put a few cherrieos on his high chair tray every once in a while. When he was able to pick them up and put them in his mouth reliably, we moved on to soft chunks of fruits and veggies. I don't remember what age that was, but I think it was well after 6.5 months. I still chopped meat into very small pieces, even after he had moved on to larger veggies and fruits. I would continue to puree meat for a while. Meat has to be chewed a lot, I would wait until your LO has mastered chewing soft fruits and veggies first.

  • My LO has been eating tiny chunks of meat since 6mo.  He got his two bottom teeth just before 5 mo and 4 of his top teeth are coming in now.  He has done fine with it and can chew it remarkably well with just his gums.  Good luck!

This is the case for us, too. I have pics in my blog of LO eating a variety of non-purees. He mashes the food with his gums.
