Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Going on a week-long trip. What to pack for my four month old?

In five days we'll be flying back east for my sister's wedding and for a visit with dh's family.  I'm trying to figure out how much of everything to pack, since we're going to try to use one suitcase for the three of us.

I'd pack light and just do laundry at my in-laws, but my daughter gets contact dermatitis from normal laundry detergent and fabric softener and I don't want to have to buy detergent for one load of laundry.  Between drooling, spitting up, and blowouts, she usually goes through everything that fits her in about a week.

She doesn't really have a ton of outfits.  Mostly just onesies, sleep and plays, and two dressy little outfits for the rehearsal dinner and the wedding.  Should I just pack everything?

Also, after the rehearsal dinner (scheduled to end at 8pm) there will be a dessert reception at a hotel nearby.  I really want to go, and I'm trying to figure out how to swing going to both while making sure that my little girl gets to sleep.  She's pretty hard to get down lately and I'm thinking of plopping her into my ring sling after the rehearsal dinner and just walking over to the dessert reception, since it would only be a five minute walk and she's usually passed out within ten minutes of being in the sling.

Sorry that this is a novel, but I would really appreciate your advice!  Thanks!

  • I am assuming you are checking a bag so...

you could premeasure the laundry detergent and put enough for one load into a ziplock baggie.  Then you could bring as much as you need without having to buy it (I'd put the small ziplocks in a big one just to be on the safe side).

If she goes through a lot of outfits you could either bring a lot of detergent and do a lot of small loads to make sure she has enough clothes

    or

pack them all.  If you put them in gallon size ziplocks and squeeze all the air out of them they won't take up that much room.

And if you think your DD can handle it I think the sling and a walk are a great idea!

    Good Luck!

  • We use gallon size ziplock bags. We put everything DS generally uses in one day in a bag...so an outfit, extra onesie, socks, pjs, etc all in one. The we squeeze the air out. That way the clothes don't take up that much room and it's easy to just grab a bag each day and know everything you need is in it. I also pack one in case of emergency bag with extra extras, but in your case I would just go buy a sample size of her detergent and bring it along.

  • The ziploc bag is a great idea, ladies! Thanks for the tip!

I spent 2.5 weeks with our families in June.  I bought diapers and wipes when I got there.  LO had his own suitcase (a duffle bag) which was half filled w/ burp cloths and blankets.  I did laundry at my parents house who'd already purchased the same detergent we use for LO's clothes.  I left a lot of stuff at their houses for the next time we are there too.  So, if traveling w/ enough clothes (or detergent in a plastic bag) for the week doesn't work, you could always buy the detergent for future usage, since you will be seeing your family again.

  • We went away for almost a week last week for my grandfathers funeral, and I totally overpacked...So I like the idea of putting each days outfit in ziploc bags.  Just don't forget spares in case of accidents!

One thing I'm glad I did - bought diapers once I got down there.  I brought enough for the day of traveling and the day after, but bought a pack once I got there so I wouldn't take up space in the car.  There was just enough to get me home too, so I didn't have to end up bringing home extra.

I did not find it very useful to bring the boppy or stroller...but your case might be different.  Our pack n play was very helpful.  That way her toys weren't everywhere all over my grandmothers house.
