Breastfeeding

nipple preference

My DS is 10 days old. I also have a 2.5 yr old, to which I was unsucessful breastfeeding. I wasn't well educated and didn't get the proper support. This time I read, went to support groups, etc. I also had breast surgery (small implant AND skin reduction, lift) 5 years ago. I'm able to pump about an ounce from my right side and 1/2 ounce from my left. DS won't latch AT ALL on to my left, unless he isn't hungry at all and I'm using a nipple sheild. Now, he is rejecting the right side too. He was really jaundiced 2 days after birth and made me supplement with a bottle after nursing. I rented the hospital pump and have been pumping 3x, nursing him on the right. Last night he was completely rejected the right again, I used a nipple sheild and he latched. My guess is he already has nipple preference and I need to fix it. I really want to make this work this time. Does anyone have any advice on how to break him of wanting only the bottle? Also, he still roots after breastfeeding, even if he is latched for an hour. Then he will take a gulp of the bottle and fall asleep. Does anyone have any advice on getting rid of the bottles all together??? HELP! :) thx

Re: nipple preference

  • First of all - breathe! It'll be okay.

Second - If the nipple shield is what works, go with it for now and worry about weaning from it later when he is ready. I used one for the first 6 weeks.

Third - Call a LC. With the surgery issues and his jaundice, I think there are a lot of variable here that you need some support with.

When you do give a bottle - make sure you are also pumping to keep your supply up. Doing lots of skin to skin will also help.
