Long car ride-frozen breastmilk

Hi Ladies!

First time poster here and I am in need of some advice. I am moving and have a 23 hour drive ahead of me (which should be a ton of fun with a 2 month old). I am looking for a way to bring my stash with me. My family keeps telling me to just dump it and build a stash when I get there but it is approx. 400 oz. I am going back to work in September and need that freezer stash. My husband tells me that just sticking it in a styrofoam cooler will work but I am not too sure about that. We will have a few overnight stops in our travels, 1 at the 7 hour mark at families so we can put it in their freezer for the short period of time we are there. The other overnight stop will more than likely be in a hotel where I can not be sure that there will be a freezer for my use. What is your advice?

Thanks in advance!

  • No way would I dump 400oz.  I would pack it in a cooler with tons of ice and NOT open the cooler until you get somewhere to put it in the freezer or replenish the ice, rinse and repeat until you are at your destination.  Good luck!

  • i would look into a really good cooler (some you can even plug into your car to help get cool) and either lots of ice packs or look into dry ice. Then i would not or rarely open the cooler.

  • I'm shuddering just thinking about dumping 400 oz.  I read somewhere that ice is warmer than the frozen milk and it will cause the milk to thaw faster.  Use the flat gel packs and a good cooler.  Put it all in the freezer at the first stop and refreeze the gel packs.  Then just re-pack it for the second leg of the trip.  I also might cover the cooler in towels or blankets to keep the sun off it.  That's what I would do anyway!

  • Have you thought about shipping it?  I would NOT dump it.  But definitely pack with lots of cold packs instead of ice.  Maybe check it daily to see if there is any that defrosted so you can try to use those up within 24 hours.

  • Could you look into getting some dry ice?  My mom shipped ice cream to us and it came packed w/ dry ice.  It would stay cold a lot longer that way.
  • Dry ice! If they can ship ice cream across the country, you should be able to get your BM where you are going. And no, I would not dump that!
