FFFC-my boss sucks

Starting early...

Yesterday I was informed by our CFO that my boss, the president of the company that I have worked at for almost 23 year, is retiring at the end of the year.  I report directly to him. Up until the last 2 years or so, I viewed him like a father.  The guy does not have enough huzpah to tell me himself. I was so hurt yesterday, I couldn't talk with him.  Hey, at least I have a job, where else can I go where I can be treated like dirt......

Re: FFFC-my boss sucks

  • Do you work for a large corporation?  They usually have very strict protocol for when a CEO or President steps down.  No rumor mills, since that can affect the price of stock, etc.   So maybe he was not allowed to speak specifially to individual employees about his plans.

Sorry you feel so hurt.  I know it's hard, but don't take it personally.   It's business, not a personal affront to you or your loyalty to him or to the company.

  • Now that you've been told, can you talk to him about it, or have the last two years been really bad?  Either way, I am sorry...

All of this. I had a job once where my whole department was being axed and our responsibilities were being moved to the parent company. The sucky thing was that we were all told in a meeting by the CEO and found out that our boss had known and one of the guys on our team was our boss's best friend.

So horrible, but I do think there are rules about discussing stuff.

  • Did I read correctly that you have worked there for 23 years? Were you 15 when you started there?

Is the guy really retiring, or maybe he has been pushed to retire? Also, I have a great relationship with most of my co-workers, but we shouldn't forget that this is just work. Co-workers will never be as close to you as your family.

  • Seems a little cold to me, but as other posters have said, there may be protocol at play here.  Men - what can you do......

This, it's weird how corporations work but they usually are pretty hush-hush about retirement, layoffs and firings. It's annoying.
