Poll- How much time is your DH taking off for the birth?

Re: Poll- How much time is your DH taking off for the birth?

  • It depends on when the baby is born - I'm due September 1st.

If she's born in August he will be able to take only 2 days (for the L&D essentially) and then back to work for the rest of August.  He's also off every 5th day after next weekend, so we could get lucky and have the baby around one of his days off - and hopefully not when he's on call (his last call day is August 29th).

If she's born in September, he can take 5 days paid whenever and he has weekends and labor day off.  Ideally, I would like to give birth like August 30th - then we don't have to worry about call and he could take off the most time that way.

He's a resident physician, so there's really no such thing as "paternity leave".  Luckily, unless he's on call he's off around 2, so it's not terrible and we're currently living with my parents (he started work in Dallas the Monday after I finished teaching on a Friday, so we're waiting to purchase a house until we have time to actually look for one) so I have quite a bit of support at home.

All of this to say: Not much.

  • 1-2 weeks leave but he can work from home still so that works :) At least one of us will be getting paid for the time off since my job doesn't offer mat leave w/pay. Sigh,

  • He'll get the military standard -- 10 days (calendar days, not business days, unfortunately). It's uncharged leave, so it doesn't count against his accrued leave time. And yep, it's paid.

With DS, 4 of his 10 days were weekend days that he already would've had off...but hey, it's still better than nothing!

  • Fortunately my DH gets 10 days "baby leave" from the navy.  They get paid either way, unless the president decides to take their pay away.  I just hope that's he's not too busy at the time and will actually get to be home all 10 days.  It is the Navy so there are circumstances where he may have to work a little bit during that time.

  • A lot will depend on the day of the week LO is born. If he comes on a weekend, DH won't take as many days off work. He'll definitely be off while I'm in the hospital and may take a day or two after we come home. My mom will be staying with us for a week after LO is born, so DH can go to work since she'll be there to help if needed.

  • Jeremy is self-employed and his office (when he isn't in the field) is in our house.

He will probably be in & out. Which is fine with me. This is #2 so I may hoard her to myself...lol.

  • DH gets 5 paid paternity days.  And he'll take another week off with a mix of vacation/personal days.

  • Dh will be there for the delivery (I may have to call him away from work). Anything extra, he won't get. He is working his seasonal job right now and it will be over at the end of September anyways. I will need help the first couple of days home due to the tubal ligation I will be having right after delivery but other then that, he will just be here after work (6-2pm) and on his days off (Fri & Sat). The rest of the time if I need help, I have a couple of close friends within 5 minutes and my Mom is about 25 minutes away if I need her. She is willing to take off a couple days at work if need be.

  • One week is the plan, but we've discussed more time off after that if we want him to.  Anything after the week though would probably be unpaid b/c he's used up some of his sick/vac time this year already when he got his wisdom teeth out.

  • DH is in the military, and he gets 10 days of baby leave automatically. In addition to that 10 days, he is taking an additional 3 weeks of leave so he can be with me for most of the first month.

  • I think the plan is for him to take a couple weeks of paid vacation. His company only gives paid paternity leave to guys if they are the baby's primary caretaker (which he won't be).

  • DH is taking a week off after the birth - using sick time or vacation. He also gets one month paid paternity leave, but he's not taking that until I'm done with my 3 month maternity.
  • between 1 and 2 weeks, depending on what day of the week this LO comes and how I'm doing. His company doesn't have a policy on paternity leave, and he works from home 2x/week already, so we'll play it by ear.  They gave him 1.5 weeks last time then some extra flexibility to work from home some days.

  • He fortunately gets 4 weeks paid parental leave to use within 12 weeks of the birth.  So at least 2 weeks to start and then perhaps parse out the rest over the rest of my leave.  Maybe add a week or so of vacation time.  He may also take time when my leave ends to stay home with the baby for a bit.  We're playing it a bit by year.
  • He is taking 12 days of vacation right after she arrives.  He will be taking 2 weeks paternity leave at the end of my leave.  He can take up to 12, but gets paid for the two.  We will have to wait and see how it is going before he decides to use more.

  • You guys will hate me for answering, but DH is taking two months off, paid.

We are Canadian, and because I already am at home and taking no leave, he has 9 months available to him - topped to 100% by his employer (otherwise it would be the 55%).  Neither of us wants him around that long, but he will be taking 2 months.
