Poll- How much time is your DH taking off for the birth?

This is inspired by the the paternity vs maternity leave post below.  How much time off is your DH going to take from work?  Also, is it paid, unpaid, using sick/vacation?

DH is lucky that his job is pretty flexible about leave time.  He has to use sick or vacation days, but he doesn't have to put in the request really far in advance.  Assuming LO doesn't flip, the c-section is scheduled for 9/1/11.  He'll take that Thursday and Friday off.  He automatically gets Monday (Labor Day) off.  He's also definitely taking Tuesday off.  After that, he'll take it one day at a time depending on how much help I need/how we feel about it.  He's talking about maybe doing half days for the rest of the week.  After that, his parents will be here for a week, so he'll probably be done taking days off.  He's only been at this job a year, so he wants to save his leave for days when LO is sick (my sick leave will be decimated by maternity leave).

So...he'll be taking at least 4 full days off and probably a few half days.

  • 3 weeks paid paternity followed by a month of Jewish holidays (he works for a Jewish institution, which will be closed more than it's open in October) followed by 2 weeks vacation after my maternity leave is up. We're really, really lucky.

  • 1 week of sick/vacation time. If we need him to take more he has it to take but I would rather him save his days off for around the holidays.

  • 2 weeks paid sick leave

  • Mine gets 15 days.
  • He gets 12 weeks, however it's all unpaid. He can use his holiday/sick time on top of that to be paid for it if he wants to. He has to take time off in two-week increments, as well. He'll take 2 weeks initially and then two weeks chunks here and there.

  • I'm having a c/s on a Wednesday so DH will be off Wednesday-Friday of that week, and anywhere from 3-5 days the next week, depending on how I'm feeling and evetything is going.  He's using PTO.

  • Two weeks paid sick leave.

  • 1 week.  He probably would take more, but he just started a new job in May and doesn't have any paid time off built up, and with me being on maternity leave (with NO pay) we can't really comfortably afford for him to miss more than a week.

  • DH gets 6 days paid, but he's going to take 12 weeks through FMLA and has no intention of going back to work after that.

  • 1 week paid vacation time. And then he can take it easy for a couple of weeks after that if I need him to.

  • he's taking a week.  but, he works from a home office, so he can come home early some days if needed.

  • DH actually gets up to 12 weeks via FMLA...though he has 17 weeks of vacation/sick time saved up at this point.

Plan is for him to take a few sick days off around the time I deliver, and then he is going to take 4 full weeks after my 6 weeks is up.

  • Mine will be totally off and disconnected from work for a week, and working from home flexibly the following week. His company is lax, so he will be getting paid. They don't really have sick days/time off days or anything.

  • He gets 1 week of paid paternity leave. He is saving his last week of vacation time for December when I will have to go back to work to push off having to send LO to childcare 1 more week.
  • 8 days unpaid.

  • We're hoping LO come over Labor Day weekend so he'll have that Monday off and won't have to take his vacation time. Otherwise only 5 days. He is trying to save the other days for around the holidays.

  • He's taking between 2-3 weeks after the birth using accumulated sick time.  I have to go back to work for 2 weeks in November so he'll be taking those two weeks off as well using vacation/personal time.

  • I think a week but he'll be using his vacation days.

  • He gets none from his company.  In the past he had cool bosses that gave him 1 week of paid time off but his boss now is a juice bag so he will have to take vacation time.

  • He gets 2 weeks paternity leave

  • Right now he's planning to take a week off before the c/s then two weeks after. It's all unpaid. He hasn't been at the company a full year (not til December) so he's not eligible for FMLA either. At least he's taking time off...

  • DH will probably only take a week off. It's unpaid so we really can't afford for him to take more time off.
    Mommy to three adorable boys!
  • 2 days.

That will probably go to labor and delivery. He'll have to go back to work after that and I'll be home by myself.

  • H gets a week and a half vacation time he's saving for paternity leave. Since he has been working 12-15 hour shifts while another super has been on a 5 week vacation (yes, 5 weeks and possibly another), he may negotiate for more.

  • DH will take the first 3 days or so off, depending on what day of the week I deliver. We are saving the other days for the holidays and other occasions.
    image BabyName Ticker
  • I was hoping he would take 2 weeks off, then 1 week half time.  I think he may only take one week off completely becasue his sick leave is low.  He has to be out sick quite a bit due to flare ups related to gluten intolerance.

  • HOPEFULLY, taking one week sick leave, and two weeks working from home.  I think the first week (my mom will be here) he'll be working from home, the 2nd week (if my MIL is here), he'll work from home, and the 3rd week (when it's just us), he'll be completely off.

My entire maternity leave will be unpaid, so he can't take anymore than what leave he has stored up, or we'll be in big $$$ trouble.

    Here's hoping...but who knows?

  • Gosh I wish I knew! DH has been unemployed for the last several months and just got a contract/temp job last week. He has no PTO, no benefits, and since it's a contract job, I don't think he can even "call in" sick or whatever. They do know we're expecting, and I've asked him to ask about it in a couple weeks...so we'll see I guess :/
BabyFruit Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • 2 weeks paid paternity - then up to 9 more days PTO, he also has scheduled a week at thanksgiving & a week at Christmas already, but he has to use the 9 days sometime before Dec 31st

  • I'm having a scheduled induction at the crack of dawn on a thursday morning, so he's taking Thursday and Friday off (he gets weekends already) and will return to work either on Monday or Tuesday. His work has PTO time, but it's tax season so they are discouraged from taking time if possible and there are also two other workers that have expecting wives in September so it's kinda a bummer for us...

  • He'll be taking PTO while I'm in the hospital then going back to work when I go home. So probably 3 days max? My mom will be around to help out so it's not a big deal, but he doesn't get paid paternity leave and since I'm not working it'd be difficult for us if he was taking un-paid leave, we're hoping to save some PTO for traveling around the holidays this year.

  • DH is taking the week off after LO is born, and also the week after I go back to work (when LO is 9 weeks old).  This will give us an extra week with LO at home instead of sending him to the daycare lady.

We really are and I'm tremendously grateful. I actually used to work for his company and those Jewish holidays were a lifesaver. Now they will be even more so, and Monsieur is thrilled that he'll basically be able to ween himself into a work/daddy routine.

  • FI will probably be taking a week off, unpaid. He just started a new job so he doesn't have any leave saved up yet, maybe a day of vacation by then. Plus, his brothers wedding is sept 23rd (I'm due the 30th) and he will be having to take some time off for that as well since he's in it. I just told him whatever he can get off from work, baby time off is more important. His brother is expecting people to take off almost that whole week of his wedding and we just don't know if we can afford him to take work off for 2 weeks unpaid! Anyway, I'm convinced I'll go into labor around the wedding anyway so maybe we won't evem have to worry about it!

  • He's taking his 2 weeks of paternity leave.  We haven't talked about him taking any more than that.  He does have lots of leave to use so he may take a few days here and there.

  • Sigh! MH is self employed so I thought that would really work in our favor. However he had mono earlier this year and had to take a bunch of time off.
The "plan" at this point is we'll wait and see. He thinks he will be back to work full steam ahead after a week. I think he is crazy and has no clue what life will be like with a newborn.

FWIW, I know the above makes me sound biitchy but I just want him to take a little time to really bond with our son and (selfishly) to fully appreciate what life is like with a newborn so he will empathize when I am on mat leave.

  • I am really jealous of how long some of you are going to be able to have your DHs around! Mine will be off for a week, paid, we assume. There is no actual company policy regarding paid paternity leave, but this was what ended up happening when both of our other boys were born.

  • unsure.

he stopped working in June so we could go home for a few weeks for weddings and such and then he'll be a "SAHD" until...we move back to Michigan in 2013, or if some other good job opportunity comes up.

We'll be living on my loans for school, so it'll be a little tight, but oh well.
