pump marks?

I'm starting to notice a purplish-stretchmark-looking ring around my nipples that is from where the plastic pump flanges are. I'm been pumping every 2-3 hours for the past 2 months, so obviously these marks are from the pump. Is this normal for those who EP and will they go away?

Re: pump marks?

  • I EPed DS1 for a year.  My nipples always turned purple during pumping and would stay that way for an hour or so afterward.  If it's going up into your breast tissue I'm wondering if you are using the correct flange size?  just a thought...

  • Well that was one of my thoughts--do I need a larger size flange? Its almost as if the plastic edges of the flange are pushing into my breast and making the marks. Its definitely not my nipple--its further out around my nipple, exactly where the edge of the plastic flange hits my breast. I'm using the large size already and I'm only a D cup, so I thought I was using the right size. ??
  • Cup size doesn't really matter with what the flange size is. It has to do with your nipple size as you're pumping.

How are you holding the flanges to your breasts as you pump? is it possible you're pushing them too tight? If the pump feels ok on your nipple/areola area I don't think you'd need a bigger flange sizes.  Do you have a lactation consultant you can ask to look about your flange size?
