DH is an officer in the AF. He just mentioned that they are changing the retirement benefits. No longer 20 years = full pension. Does anyone know details or can you point me to a link explaining it? Thanks!
These are proposed changes, that would need to be approved by congress. Given congress has not gone into conference, let alone passed the 2012 NDAA, it's a moot point (I am not even sure it's in either the senate or house versions)
however, given the history of the Health Care For Life promises and lawsuits and finally TRICARE For LIfe, it is doubtful that WHEN there is a change, there won't at least be a grandfather clause. In fact I have never NOT heard them talk about a grandfather clause in the 9 years I worked on the hill in the military association world.
too many NCOS and SMEs would leave if there wasn't that promised 20 year retirement mark. It would decimate the brain trust of the military system.
finally, as I already stated, this is not a new proposal, like increasing/adding copays to TRICARE Prime or changing the formularies again. And each year, they never go anywhere. Not that it won't happen, but it's not happening tomorrow.
It's been like that for awhile...20 years 50%, 30 years 100% retirement

Its not that simple.
At 20 years, you get 50% of your salary at time of retirement. From there, you get an additional 2.5% more per year (if you get to 30 - and if you go past 30, which takes an act of congress you can actually get up to 105%).
However, the actual amount you get depends on which program/system you choose - High 36 or SCB/REDUX.
This is a great article that explains what changes MAY take place, and it gives lots of details about the changes and how they will effect troops based on length of service up to when the changes are enacted (and whether you will be grandfathered in, or not).
Just to put it out there, the retirement wont be taken away, it will just be changed. In short: instead of earning 50% at 20 years, you will receive about 16.5% of your base pay per year in your TSA (401k) from the government....you can add whatever you want to this amount of course. This will help those who don't choose to serve 20 years or more because whatever is in their TSA when they leave is theirs to take with them. Honestly, I think we might be able to do better in 20 years with investments once we have enough to get into some of the higher yield accounts... so, personally, either way we are happy.

Military.com has the best explanation for those that want to calculate out what they are (in our case) or could get. https://www.military.com/benefits/military-pay/retired-pay/military-retirement-system
