School-Aged Children

PLEASE remind your children...

That playing "who can hold their breath the longest" in a swimming pool is VERY dangerous. I found out today that a girl who I used to deliver newspapers to her family drowned this past weekend playing that game with some friends. She held her breath the longest but when coming up, passed out, and drowned. Adults were present and pulled her out and gave CPR but she was gone. :(

  • Yikes!  What a tragedy!

This is a concern for early school aged kids.  This is the first summer my son has been able to swim really well, and he has asked me to "time how long I can stay under water" several times.

We've had to talk about the danger involved in this activity.  It's tough, because kids want to improve their stamina and push themselves, but they don't always have the best judgment about when they've pushed it too far.

  • This is soo sad. My nephew is autistic and whenever the other kids at his school tell him to do things he does them. Well, his latest is holding his breathe until he passes out. The other kids think its funny to see him change colors! :(

That's horrible.  Some kids are so cruel.

OP, thanks for the warning, I'll make sure to make sure my kids understand.

  • That's really heartbreaking. :(
