Hyperemesis/severe morning sickness checkin?

Is anyone interested in this? I know I'm not the only one with hyperemesis.

How you ladies doing? That's a relative question. Obviously we're not good, but how's today?

How are you emotionally?

Yesterday my midwife told me about a study (I think from England, I was curled up slowing dying at the time so may have messed that up) on women with hyperemesis. Consistently, almost all of them could keep lemonade and potato chips down much more regularly than anything else.

So your mission today, should you chose to accept it, is to test that theory. I plan to.

Re: Hyperemesis/severe morning sickness checkin?

  • Full disclosure here, I'm really feeling pretty normal 90% of the time thanks to Phenergan.  Zofran is not really doing anything for me except causing severe constipation.  But Phenergan is the only reason I'm able to function at all.  Prior to starting it, I spent all day every day in the bed or on the bathroom floor.  It was awful.  I had to have IV fluids the first week and probably would have needed them at home if the Phenergan hadn't done the trick so I'm really glad the meds have finally helped.  Anyway, my point in saying all that is that I have to take the pill at 3 am so that I can get the sleepys out and I can function by 7 am. Well, apparently my alarm didn't go off last night so at 5:30 I woke myself up gagging.  I took a pill then and FOUGHT to keep it down.  Of course it knocked me out around 6:30 am, just in time for my kids to wake up at 7.  So basically, I'm still feeling foggy and just off today all because I missed that pill by 2.5 hours.  Tonight, I will set multiple alarms!

Also, I have a gripe about my insurance... generally it's pretty good but I'm finding it's really weird about what meds it covers.  My OB suggested that I try the newly re-released Diclegis which is really just B6 + Unisom.  I was ticked off to get to the pharmacy to find out it would be $143 for a month supply after my insurance only covered about $40.  Seriously... I can buy the B6 + Unisom OTC for like $10.  So needless to say, I'm not taking the Diclegis.  After talking to the Pharmacist, she agreed that if the Phenergan is working that I should stick with it for a few more weeks and see if this eases up in the 2nd tri.  My gut is telling me that it won't ease up though and that this is going to be an issue until I deliver.  I just hope the Phenergan keeps working!

  • @slwprincess Did you have this with your other kids?

The average time for hyperemesis to ease is 16 weeks, so hold out hope. Mine ease at 22-24 with my first, and was much milder the rest of the time (mild episodes once or twice a day). That's apparently pretty rare.

Phenergan is my next stop since zofran seems to hate me. Unisom and b6 did nothing.

  • I've been hanging in thanks to diclegis. It's funny you mentioned potato chips and lemonade because that's literally what I've been living on. Since I got on the meds I've been puking a lot less but still noshing all day to curb the nausea and have gained 10 lbs. which is annoying. Emotionally I am OK until I start feeling a sick and then I get immediately depressed. Like why can't I have a normal pregnancy? My husband is basically taking care of our daughter without me and I'm really missing them and the guilt and isolation of it all is hard to swallow!!! I feel like I'm on a bad trip or really long plane ride and just waiting for it to end. So that's me. :) thank you for asking!

  • Hey slwprincess the unisom thing never worked for me but diclegis definitely does. I think because its formulated to slow release and you can take a few throughout the day. Also your doctor should have a coupon so it's not more than $30 or you can get it online, that's what I did. Let me google it real fast. Ok it's just on the diclegis website, go look! Warning I was foggy on it for about a week but now it doesn't make me tired at all.

  • No, I did not have HG with either of my other pregnancies.  I barely had any nausea with my first, a little more with my second.  A couple doses of zofran did the trick with her though.  My mom told me that each of her pregnancies got harder and it appears the same is true for me.  The HG completely caught me off guard (I really didn't even believe that's what it was- I was SURE it was food poisoning!) and it is the primary reason that I will be tying my tubes this go round.  I can never put my family through this again.  Those 2 weeks when I was so sick were the most dark and depressed I've ever experienced.  I feel blessed to have this one last pregnancy and in between dry heaves, I am really trying hard to enjoy it because I know it will be my last.  I hope you're right that it will ease up in a few more weeks.  My OB seems to think so too.

  • Sour stuff/lemonade helped with my previous pregnancies but this time, minty stuff seems to help.  When I was trying to fight off the gags this morning, I used Scope Mouthwash and it really did seem to help me keep it at bay.  Also, Lifesavers mints seem to help during the day.  Not sure why that is?  Chips are not appealing to me at all right now so I find that interesting too.  Pretzels seem to be ok though.

  • Out of curiosity (not trying to pain Olympics, wondering if I should push for more meds now), how many times are you guys getting sick a day at the moment?

I'm at 5-6 episodes of vomiting on a good day, each one involving 20-40 minutes of being sick, plus the constant nausea.

On bad days I get sick every time I move, so I'm on the bathroom floor for four to six hours till it eases enough to go to bed. Bad days happen maybe once a week.

Oh good to know!  I will check it out and mention it to my OB.  Still thinking that I should stick with the Phenergan though as long as its working?  I guess I'm just too chicken now to switch- ha.  My Pharmacist said she had HG with her last baby too and she took Phenergan as well and felt like it was the better/safer choice over Reglan which was the only other option for her at the time.  She mentioned that the B6 + Unisom combo seems to be seeing a recent resurgence with the re-release of Diclegis b/c she hadn't heard anyone trying that in years but now she's had several women asking about it in the last several months.

  • Totally keep doing whatever is working. I get sick about now maybe once or twice a day (with a few no puke days!). I take the diclegis once in the morning, afternoon and before bed.

  • Oh but I should say I'm still nauseous most of the day.

  • After my worst day (IV at the hospital), my OBGYN had me take Phenergan suppositories 3 times a day.  They would completely knock me out and make my body feel like lead (not good when you have 2 other kids).  When I hit the 10 1/2 week mark I was able to go back to 16mg Zofran and pepcid.  So far it has been doing the trick.  I am still nauseated, but not throwing up! :)  Unisom never did the trick for me.   FWIW, I was not sick like this with my twins and I had extra hormones running through me.  I guess it just comes on whenever.  I am curious to see how many of us are having girls.  The people who know about my pregnancy (close friends and family) think this is a girl b/c I've been sick.  I think that is an old wives tale. :)

On another note, my doctor wrote me a prescription for Reglan, but my pharmacist (who I love) talked me out of it b/c of the side effects.  I'm curious to see if anyone is taking Reglan & to know if you are getting any ill effects.  My doc said she saw few cases of Reglan effects in the many years of her practice, but the pharmacist said she saw a lot.  I guess that makes sense since she would see more of the general population taking drugs.....right?
