GD help: can't get enough blood for my testing?

i've only been testing since yesterday and have had issues every time w/ getting enough blood to feed the meter.  i have it jacked up to the deepest stick setting and using the side of my finger like they said to give me hardly a drop.  i switched this morning to the tip of my finger and got enough, but i had to squeeze for a while to get it.  now my finger is sore from it.   any advice if you've had this situation? thanks!

  • There are different gauge lancets.  Get one with a bigger needle.

  • What brand do you have? I have the Delica lancets. I get sore on some fingers no matter what, and it stinks. BUT-

a couple things to help you get more blood (I had this issue too)--

    - Make sure your hands are warm.

    - Leave the lancet on your finger for a second. Don't push and remove. Push, wait a beat to let the needle recede, and then remove.

    - Put the device down, and then squeeze. Milking the finger doesn't really work for me, I just squeeze my finger tip. Some fingers don't require much squeezing (middle and ring) but others do.

    - You will get there! And ps: super cute siggy pic!

All of this! Sometimes it takes awhile to get there. But you will!

Also, point your hand/fingers down, towards the ground. That sometimes helps the blood flow better.

  • You can also prick the side of your finger, that usually helps.

it seems like the opposite works for me, the side gives me barely anything!

thanks ladies (and to MrsMVM, i think he's pretty cute too), i will try that all in an hour when i test again.

  • I was in the same boat and found the following to be really helpful.  Put your arm down to your side and shake it as much as you can to get as much blood to your hand as possible.  Then before you prick your finger - massage your hand focusing on an outward motion (toward your finger that you're going to be using).  I find if my DH does it I get a ton of blood - if I do it I get enough... but if I don't do it then I either get barely enough or an error.  Good luck!

  • I'm dealing with the same thing....what I do is prick my finger (do not insert the strip in the meter yet) I push on all the sides of my finger to push blood out..once I have a good amount I then stick the strip in and do the test. This has helped me otherwise I'm wasting strips because I can't get enough blood. Good luck!
