needing to suppliment with formula ?

So, i work a long work week and finally burned through my freezer stash last week.  i have been using it off and on to help out when i was not able to bank enough oz over the weekend.  Tomorrow may be the first day i have to add formula to her bottles (she's almost 5 months!).  I'm hoping this does not affect my supply.  I want to continue to pump at the same times and BF exclusively at home, but i'm afraid that the formula will stay in her stomach longer and she will not want to eat as much.

I have a week off next month in which I am going to BF only and hope to build up my milk supply.  Plus, i am looking to getting a new job that is less of a commute and will give me more time with my LO.

Any of you out there had to suppliment for a while but were able to get back to just BM again?

 TIA

Re: needing to suppliment with formula ?

  • I supplemented for the 1st 2 months of DD's life until I got on reglan and then domperidone once I weaned off the reglan, and we now EBF.

I know it's not the same situation, but there are many things you can do to increase supply. kellymom has tons of info.

    GL!

  • I'm not going to be too much help because my experience didn't totally match up with yours but I just wanted to comment that I was SO worried for months about what would happen should I ever have to supplement with formula but it wasn't the end of the world when it eventually did happen.  Life goes on, LO and I were still healthy and I got to stop worrying about sqeezing out every possible ounce around my work schedule.  It's a bit off topic but just don't want anyone to stress out about it like I did :)
  • oh, i've tried everything.  Reglan, herbs, oatmeal, lactation cookies, tea, TONS of water... still not able to produce more than 3 oz at a session and i don't have the ability to pump more than 3 times during the workday.  I pump once in the morning and before bed on top of that.  My day starts at 5am and ends at 11pm, so i'm sure sleep would be beneficial, but it's not in the equation.  I even have a Medela Symphony pump at work for the month.  I'm just hoping to continue to pump what i can until my vacation and when she starts solids, she'll eventually not need as much.

thanks!  I had to come to terms with this two weeks ago when i bought formula after i saw the end of my freezer stash coming near.  I was kicking myself for not pumping more while on leave, but how was I to know.

I'm just hoping to be able to BF most the time.
