Pre-School and Daycare

Ha. All that wondering/worrying about preschool bags...

We finally had our preschool open house today (DS starts tomorrow) and they are asking that the kids use those cheap recycled/reusable grocery bags you pick up for a buck as their bags this year. LOL. Of course, I had already bought him a new backpack, but he can use it for other things I guess. Their mantra is "dress for success" and think that the heavy backpacks are too much for the kids and the artwork tends to get more smushed in them. Whatever. I don't care, and probably agree, but it would be nice to know these things more than a day before they start. For all of the great things I've heard about the program, so far I'm a bit disappointed in the communication/lack thereof and the last-minute things dropped on us.

  • hmm I think my ds would have trouble carrying a bag like that.

  • Harmon with one of those bags wouldn't work well.  I guess they expect the parent to carry them.  It was funny you mention that b/c I stopped at the pre-k yesterday asking for the supply list.  The Asst Principal teased me I was type A, but I told her it just is easier for parents to know what is needed before you are starting.

  • Ha, I remember wondering about backpacks before school started last year only to be given a school tote bag at back-to-school night which was only a week beforehand. All that goes in it are a folder and artwork, so it works well.

We have a reusable bag from Whole Foods that's about half the size of our other grocery bags, and I know that would be easy for DD1 to handle, so maybe you could find something like that?

  • DS's preschool uses buckets.  Same idea I guess, but kind of weird at the same time.

  • I would suggest a reusable bag from the Target dollar section. They always have kid-sized ones with cute designs. You could pick up a few to have just in case one breaks.

That's really annoying that they waited so long to tell you. I kind of wish DD's school was using those instead of a back pack. We have so many bags. They told us absolutely no to that, though, even though it will only have a folder in it. Sigh.

  • MH got DD1 a bag like that at the Disney store with princesses on it because she loves loading her toys in bags to play grocery store. They likely have toy story or cars ones if your DS had a character backpack he's bummed about not using.

  • I actually already had a reusable U of M bag that is cool that he is using now. I'm just disappointed in the communication failure so far. Hopefully it improves, but I'll be honest in that I have a few misgivings.

  • I agree they should have told you earlier! Maybe this is a new policy and they could have just decided yesterday! :)

  • We were emailed a supply list before the start of school. all they asked was that you get a Full Sized Backpack for the kids. Not that smaller cutsie ones, so the stuff they bring home doesn't get smushed.
