Trying to Get Pregnant

12 months versus 12 cycles ... clarification pls

Hi- sorry if this has been asked and I missed it.

I'm wondering if the "trying for a year" means by month or by cycle? DH and I have been trying for a year next month, but really only 8-9 cycles due to me having two very long cycles and poor timing with one cycle.

I mentioned this to my OBGYN and she recommended actually trying for 12 cycles before we move on to more infertility testing (I had some basic blood tests done that were all normal), but I wanted to see what everyone was told and/or doing.

TIA

Re: 12 months versus 12 cycles ... clarification pls

  • My OB/GYN told me the opposite. She told me because my cycles are longer than 28 days (35-40 normally) that if we aren't pregnant with in 12 months then we could go back in to start some basic testing.

     Good luck!

  • We've been trying for 12 months. With 1 cycle.  If my doctor told me to wait 12 cycles, I would have some choice words for her and probably be escorted out of the hospital.

If I was in your situation, I would push a little more to get some testing done.  12 months is along time, and 16 months is even longer.  Go back and see what you can do.

    Good luck.

  • 12 months is generally the insurance minimum. Infertility is also defined by 12 months. I went at almost exactly 12 months, and it wasn't even an issue that it was only 11 cycles. Everyone has different length cycles. These would both be reasons why I would push for testing. Or, if she won't do it, as for a referral to an RE.

  • I would think it means 12 months, even if that is less then 12 cycles. For me they would be about the same as my cycles are 28 days pretty regularly. For someone else it might be a lot less cycles, but they would still have been trying for 12 months.

  • I've wondered this myself! We're coming up on our twelfth month of trying but only our sixth cycle and two of those I for sure didn't even ovulate. I think we'll definitely try a few more months before we even consider going to the doctor. I may be in denial....

  • thanks for the responses. I'm going to talk with her about it!

  • When I went for my annual check up last October, I mentioned that we'd be trying starting Jan. She told me a year, not 12 cycles. But, I think different OB's might have different opinions on the matter. Definitely call your OB and ask for clarification if you're not sure. GL!
  • I've been ttc for close to 2 years but that's only been 8ish cycles. If I had to wait for 12 natural cycles before seeking help, I wouldn't be able to see a specialist until close to my 3rd year of trying. I started tests/treatments around the year mark but could have started sooner as I already had a diagnosis (PCOS).
