Virus with just a fever

DS was sent home from daycare last Thursday with a fever of 101. Only a fever and he wasn't eating much. But drinking plenty of fluids and sleeping fine. I took him to the doctor on Friday. His ears and throat were fine. Doc said it was probably just a virus. Fever went away Friday evening and he started eating again. Saturday and Sunday he was fine. I thought it was over.

I pick him up from daycare on Monday and they said he had been "off" all day. Just irritable and not himself. But he was eating and sleeping fine. That evening he felt warm so  took him temp and it was 100.4. He went to bed fine.

He woke up Tuesday morning and he was fine. I took him to school. 2 hours later get the call that he has a fever and was acting very lethargic and not eating. I pick him up and he had a fever all day yesterday. It finally broke around 4pm(he was sweating profusely) and he ate a huge dinner and slept great. He can't go back today because of the 24 hour fever rule. So he's home with me today too. He had a great morning, ate great and was acting normal. He felt warm before his nap. His temp was 99.5. He's still sleeping. I'm afraid he will have a fever again when he wakes up since they normally get higher in the afternoon and evening.

Sorry this turned into a book. So basically he has had this fever on and off for a week. Have any of your children had a virus this long? I'm not sure if I should call the doctor again or keep waiting. He is eating and sleeping fine. Bu he can't go to school with anything over 100 degrees...

Thanks!

Re: Virus with just a fever

  • sounds like it could be Roseola? Evan had it last summer, but his fever was a bit higher (like 103) But it would be high, then go down for the rest of the day.... I would think he was better, and he would wake up w/ a fever again. It lasted about 5-6 days, and then he broke out in a rash once his fever broke (which is how you will know if it's roseola) The rash isn't contagious, and didn't bother him. It was gone w/in a day or 2.

    Hope he's feeling better soon!

  • Thanks. He just woke up and his fever is back to 101. I'll take it again in a bit since you are supposed to wait 30 minutes after he wakes up.

This working from home and trying to entertain and take care of him at the same time is killing me!

  • My household was sick last week.

DS1 - Thu, Fri he had a fever, lethargic and sore throat

DH - Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun he had a high fever and sore throat

Me - Sun I had a fever.  Mon, Tue I felt ok.  Wed, Thu yeast infection and puking (probably because of the high fever on a super-hot day.)

DS2 - didn't get sick at all...but he probably brought the germs home from daycare.  :)

  • I took him back into the doctor this afternoon. We are going to have bloodwork done tomorrow. Hopefully its just a virus he is having a hard time shaking.

Seems like there are alot of sick people right now!

I was going to say this (T had it last summer) or the other one the Dr. told us is super common in summer with kids is coxsackie virus aka hand and mouth disease https://www.askdrsears.com/topics/childhood-illnesses/coxsackie-virus...which T had for her Birthday this year. Fever came out of nowhere, stopped eating, drinking, and was so out of it. Finally took her to the Dr. on day 3 and she had two large ulsers on her throat. They told us they see a ton of it in the summer and many times the child never gets the spots on their hands, etc....it might be in their mouth or on their throat like T had which we never would have known had we not taken her to the Dr. Anyway it's really really contagious and certain strands of it can get bad.

  • Oh yeah. I'm aware of the hand foot and mouth disease. It has stayed away from us so far!

He literally has no symptoms but the fever. It peaked tonight at 101.8 before bed. No sores, ears and throat are fine, etc. He is even acting pretty normal. He was running around the doctor's office goofing off and they couldn't believe he had a fever. The only thing is that when he has the fever, he doesn't eat great. He will snack, but not eat a good meal. When the fever is away, he will eat as normal. Tomorrow is day 8 with this on and off fever. So weird.

Maybe he has a roseola or hfm with no other symptoms? I'm at a complete loss.

    I appreciate all the input!
