My LO is EBF (10 weeks old) and I intend to continue but I am back at work and she is now in daycare 10 hours a day and I wanted to prepare her in case the pumping doesn't work and I have to give formula too while she is at DC. My doctor suggested Infamil Newborn and gave us some little bottles to try out. We were at a funeral yesterday and i gave her 2 oz during the service and about 2 hours later she started throwing up... I mean she covered 5 people in puke through out the course of the afternoon and did not eat for about 5.5 hours (I then gave her breast milk). The last time I tried to supplement with formula we used soy and she did the same thing (that was at around 3 weeks and I assumed it was reflux)... has anyone else experienced this? Is there something in the formula that would make her throw up like this? She does have reflux but it has been pretty well maintained with zantac twice daily. Any ideas?
Re: LO throws up when she eats formula...
If she's not showing signs of a milk intolerance with your BM, I wouldn't put her back on soy.
I personally love Good Start. It's what my pedi recommended when I had to abruptly wean my DS at 6 months. He recommends it to all breastfeeding moms once it's time to wean. It has these comfort proteins that are supposed to mimic breastmilk. It doesn't stink, doesn't/didn't make my kids gassy and it doesn't/didn't cause them to spit up. Enfamil and Similac both did that.
Could you try out some Good Start and consider using that instead?
Also, I wouldn't start replacing feedings with formula just yet. Maybe take a wait and see approach to see how the pumping works out for you?? That would be my first step. Worry about formula later.
I also wanted to say that there will be an adjustment period once you introduce formula. Not all brands are tolerable by all babies. Most pedi's will recommend that baby stays on one formula for 2-3 weeks before you know whether it's a good fit or not. I knew right away that Enfamill was not going to work for us, and it was even Gentlease. With this baby, I went right to Good Start at 8 weeks when I weaned her and she's had some bumps in the road here and there, but she's doing great at 12 weeks.
I EPed for 6 weeks but had to stop due to decrease in supply even though I tried everything I researched. Enfamil and Similac also caused my LO to spit up a ton along with soy formula. I would also recommend Good Start and also my LO really likes Parents Choice formula (Walmarts brand) he doesn't tend to spit either of those up. I would definitely NOT recommend Similacs Gentle formula because it's really weird and bubbly which causes gas bubbles and made my LO spit up and he was really unhappy with it.
