Breastfeeding

breast size

prepregnancy i wore a 34 D.  Went to get a nursing bra today and ended up with a 40 C which fits to a tee.  Tried 36 and 38 width but i still had leakage on the sides of my breasts, but with Even the D cup they were way too roomy.  I love the bra I ended up with and am not concerned about the fit as it feels absolutely perfect, Just wondering how normal it was to go up so much width wise, but actually to drop a cup size.

Re: breast size

  • I don`t know about what is normal in terms of bra sizes changing, but I do know that in my personal experience nursing bra sizes are weird. I wear a 34D or 36D in a regular bra right now but the best fitting nursing bra for me is a 38C. I wore a 34C prepregnancy, and I KNOW my bustline below the breasts has not increased 4 inches.  If you are comfortable, I wouldn`t worry about the numbers.

  • Your ribcage expands when you are pregnant. So I would say it's normal. For me personally, my ribcage shrunk considerably immediately following delivery and was back to normal once I got back to my PP weight.

As far as cup size goes, a D cup at 34 =/= a D cup at 40. It has more to do with the ratio of the ribcage to the breast size and is not the same accross the board. So if your ribcage goes back down, you may very well go up a cup size w/o actually changing breast size.

  • thanks for the input.  I guess it would also be best to only buy one or two now and see what fits best a few weeks postpartum after some weight loss

Your size may also change once your milk comes.  I have one stretchy nursing bra for now and some nursing tanks, but am waiting until after my milk comes in to buy more bras so that I have a better idea on the correct size.

    This is a good idea - I went from a 34 DD while pregnant to a 34 G (!) nursing bra.
