Bumper Question

Hi!! Thanks for helping with my bumper confusion.

To my knowledge, there are two types of bumpers:

1)  Thin rectangles that line the crib

2) Ones that look like long jelly rolls and go on either side of the baby

Do I have that right? Or does #2 go by a different name?

We are considering #2 for co-sleeping baby between us in our bed but a breathable version or possible a rolled up towel once I read up more on safety considerations.

Re: Bumper Question

  • To me, bumpers are what go around the perimeter of the crib.  The other thing you're describing is a sleep positioner

Is this the #2 you're talking about?

I've heard them called "Wonder Bumpers"...but that's because it's a brand name (like Kleenex or Band-Aid).

  • Yes, #2 is a sleep positioner.  And just for the record, if you're worried about bumpers for safety reasons, co-sleeping is no better, perhaps worse.  Just a thought.
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics actually recommends co-sleeping, (which they define as sharing a room with the infant), as it is thought to reduce the risk of SIDS. However, they do not recommend bed-sharing (actually sharing a bed with the child) because it can increase the risk of SIDS.

For a short, easy summary of the policy, read this.

OR, for the actual AAP publication, this.
