Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Need help STTN

Hi!  This is my first post over here as we just "graduated" to the 3-6 month board.  Technically LO STTN since he will sleep 5-8 hours a night.  However, I can't seem to get this long stretch over the right night time period.  I have adjusted feeding schedules to try and get the last night time feeding around 11pm- 12am but it is not working.  He always seems to wake up around 2-3am.  Last night LO ate at 6pm (6oz) and I figured he would eat again at 11-12 (perfect!) but instead he didn't wake up until almost 2am to eat!!  Any suggestions?  (I go back to work tomorrow and I dread the middle of the night feeding being a long term thing.)

  • The only thing I could suggest is a dream feed at 11pm. Sleeping to 2 or 3 with one feeding would be awesome. I think that he you did adjust and he woke at 11 or 12 to feed you might be looking at another feeding around 4. I would try the dream feed or just feed at 2 or 3.

  • If you are just graduating to this board then you are expecting too much. Baby is probably just too young.

Give it time. My LO is 5 months and just started sleeping from 10pm to 4am and I am thrilled!!!!

She gets cranky around 7pm, so I put her down for a "nap" If she does not wake by 9:30, then I wake her and give her a bottle. She sometimes does not even open her eyes. Some people refer to this as a "Dream feed". This has worked for us.

My husband and I both have VERY high stress jobs and we are having difficulty with the little sleep that we get. It is getting better VERY slowly day by day.

Try waking him for a feeding around 10pm.

  • Most BF'd babies don't drop the middle of the night feeding until 7-9 months. Just go with it and go to bed as early as you can. You'll get used to it.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

  • I have been back to work for 6 weeks now and we still have middle of the night feedings. They actually aren't too bad, you get used to them, plus if you are breastfeeding, you need that time to get up and either feed or pump and feed. I dont know how I would make it through the night, even if she didnt wake up. My goal is New Years!

  • Last night my son STTN for the first time in 2.5 months, and he is two days shy of five months. I think you'll just have to wait it out. I tried dreamfeeds along with pretty much everything else and it still didn't stop all the feedings at night. Your lo seems to be sleeping more than most for that age already. I didn't change anything for ds to sleep all night last night, it was just the waiting game.
  • I wish my LO would sleep until 2-3am after eating at 6! DD eats before bed at eight and then wakes up between 12:30-1:30 and then sometimes makes it until 6 but about half the time is up at 4 and then 6.  Sometimes she still wakes up between 10-11 pm to eat too but that one is only about twice a week. I've tried lots of schedule rearranging but there has yet to be one night she doesn't wake up at least once! I'm counting down to that day lol. Also as some PPs has said you really do adapt to the waking up and don't feel as exhausted as those first months :)

  • My DD only takes 4-5oz at night so she was also waking up.... a lot!

We were told to add rice cereal to her bottle. We started this week. She has AR and can't hold a lot of liquid in her belly and the cereal helps add calories to hold her over night and it thickens it so she doesn't have reflux as bad. She started  STTN this week, and is going 10-12 hours at night.

I would not do this without talking to your doctor but it's worth mentioning if you think LO could handle it.

Also your LO's weight has a lot to do with it, before a certain weight a lot of LO's need those calories at night to keep growing!

  • Thanks Ladies.  It sounds like we just have to wait it out.

  • Dreamfeed Baby!  Same thing was happening to us. Anna wanted to start her long stretch at 6pm. We started dreamfeeding at around 10pm and it bought us the night 75% of the time. We dropped the dreamfeed around 4.5 months and she now sleeps 7:30/8 to 6:30 90% of the time.

Trust me.. its nice when you get to that point!
