I am just curious. Is there a specific number of eggs that fert before they consider doing a 5dt? My donor is going in on Wed am for her retrieval and they said we would wait and see if it is a 3 or 5dt.
The day of transfer all depends on the growth/development of the embryo(s).

My clinic pretty much only does blastocyst transfers. So, you transfer on day 5 or 6. They believe if the embryos don't make it to blastocyst in the lab, they won't survive in the ute.

You will find that the number of 'good' embryos required before labs will suggest a 5dt vs a 3dt will vary. Also, some labs only do 3dt and others will only do 5dt. You have to talk to your RE about the lab s/he uses and weigh the pros/cons accordingly.

My first IVF we did a 5dt. We had 5 growing on day 3 and felt they were all pretty good quality. By day 5 we only had 2 left. We transferred both and I did not get pregnant. Had we transferred on day 3 I don't think we would have had better results.
For our second IVF we spoke a ton about a 3dt vs 5dt. When it came down to it, even though I still had all 7 growing on day 3, we transferred the best 2. More for peace of mind than anything else. So we did and we're pregnant with 1. We also have 2 frozen. Looking back, we may have still had all 4 on day 5 and maybe we wouldn't. There's no real way to know.
Some RE's say that if they don't make it to a 5dt in the lab they wouldn't in the ute either ... others say it's better to give them a chance in the body than in a dish. I'm not sure which one I agree with.
Good luck!

my clinic only does 5dt as they really believe that whatever makes it to that day is only what makes it period....they do have a very good lab although it does frustrate me...as my last cycle only 1 out of 10 made it to day 5...i did ask about a 3dt and my doc said he would do it but he strongly urges against it. i know this is a huge debate in the offices.
My clinic does mainly 3dt. They go with the argument that the embryos will survive better in your body than in a lab and in their experience, success rates are better with 3dt. The first time I had 8 on day 3, the second I had 9. Both IVFs resulted in a singleton pregnancy (lost the first one) and I was able to freeze the rest.
At my old RE's clinic there was no specific rule in terms of the number of embryos that would determine if it was a 3dt vs a 5dt, but rather they looked at how the embryos were doing. But like PP have said, I have heard of clinics who only do one or the other. Best of luck with your donoe this cycle hun!

I think what everyone has said here has been helpful.
My clinic would not give me specific details but just said that if the embryos met certain qualifications they might push to a 5dt.
