Breastfeeding

Desperate (thrush)

We are on week 3 of thrush and I'm about to lose my mind.  I'm EPing due to latch issues, but had tried one last attempt at latching apparently when DS was just getting thrush from the antibiotic I was on.  My OB prescribed Nystatin ointment which I used as well as washing my nipples and pump parts in vinegar/water solution after each pumping session and sterilized them once per day.  That did nothing.  I also change my bra/tank/breast pads after every pumping session and wash them in hot water.  I just completed a course of Diflucan 200 mg every other day for 5 days, which also did nothing.  I started eating plain yogurt and I don't consume a lot of sugar so I didn't really change that.  I'm going to call my OB in the morning and pick up some acidopholis.  Any other ideas?  I really don't want to wean from pumping early, but this is driving me insane!

Re: Desperate (thrush)

  • Hang in there don't give up. Does the yogurt you are eating contain live culture? That's the key to yogurt. Have you tried talking to a naturalpathic practitioner? They will be able to help you regulate the good and bad in your body and help your baby too.

Sometimes (and I'm not saying this is the case) getting rid of all the bacteria on something isn't a good thing. We need good and bad bacteria to help balance everything. So if you are cleaning everything too much you may be removng the good bacteria, which may allow the bad bacteria to take over again.

    Good luck!

I haven't tried a naturalpathic practitioner, maybe I'll try that.  I understand the good vs. bad bacteria thing, but I'm just afraid that if I don't clean my pump parts well enough they'll keep infecting my nipples.  Yes the yogurt contains live cultures.  Thanks for the tips!

  • OP, are you sure it's thrush?  Diflucan should be giving you at least some relief, although you might need to do a really aggressive treatment (two weeks).

    Could it be vasospasms?

Its definately thrush.  DS had it and my nipples are really red, itchy and uncomfortable when pumping.  The Diflucan did help slightly, but not nearly enough.

  • Probiotics for sure. Not just acidophilus-- try one with multiple strains o give your body a chance to have the "right" one. I take Primadophius Opima and Femdophius everyday.
  • I had to do a double treatment with diflucan to get rid of mine...i was on it at least 10 days.  Try the diflucan again.
  • I feel your pain. We're on our second bout of thrush and LO is only 5 weeks old. I was using topical miconazole cream (monistat) for a few days this time around. It wasn't getting any better but also not worse. Last night I tried organic raw unrefined extra virgin coconut oil. Overnight it got sooo much better! Coconut oil has natural anti fungal properties, so I'll keep using it in place of nipple cream once this is cleared up. There are other good natural remedies at https://www.candida-cure-recipes.com/home-remedy-for-thrush.html (sorry no linky, on iPad). Good luck!

  • Ug! I feel your pain (literally!).  I had recurring thrush from 4-8 week PP.  Get your dr to up your dose of Diflucan to the highest you can take and take it everyday.

The difulcan was the only thing that worked for me.

  • I've had thrush for 4 months now after DD got it.  She was clear after the first nystatin/acidophiles round, but I got it on my left nipple(due to a crack) and it wouldn't go away!

I've done acidophiles, plain yogurt, no bread/fruit/sugar diet, candida clear capsules, vinegar rinses, boiling everything, nystatin, etc...

Nothing helped.  I finally tried GENTIAN VIOLET and that helped(although she and i were bright purple for those 3 days.)   I applied it to myself at night and wore a black shirt to keep from staining anything.  Her mouth would turn completely purple for 24 hours after she fed and we got lots of comments when we went out(most thought it was ink/marker).  I am now off of it for about 3 days and it looks and feels so much better.  The only issue is I found that I have a slight rash on my right side underneath the bud and I'm freaked that it's thrush...  It's started itching so I'm about to do gentian violet for another 3 days on both sides to be sure.

I got it at CVS.  Just use a q tip to apply it
