Toddlers: 24 Months+

Need advice on downsizing toy collection

DS has a ton of toys and I've been trying to organize everything and store some in boxes for later use.  He really doesn't play with his toys these days, all he wants to do is be outside or running around the house.  The toys he does play with for a few minutes at a time are usually things that move (matchbox cars, remote control helicopters, etc.).  Should I bother keeping things like Melissa and Doug toys...wooden puzzles with shapes and animals, or those wooden trains that fit together with lots of pieces and you pull on a string? Also, he has lots of train tracks but all he does is take the track apart rather than playing with them.  Is that something that might change when he's around 2 1/2 or 3 years old? And final question: lego/mega blocks.  If he's never really played with it do you think he will get interested in them someday?

  • His attention span will get longer as he gets a little older, and he might be more interested in those things in a few months. My DS loves wooden puzzles, train stuff, and duplos. In fact, he's been playing with trains and duplos all day today. A few months ago he was all about matchbox cars, but he hasn't touched those yet today. You might want to pack up some stuff and bring it out again in a few months, but I wouldn't get rid of it yet.

  • Yes, keep those items. At 3 he's not interested in the small wooden puzzles but everything else very much so. Maybe pack up and drag back out for Xmas?

  • Ok thanks I was wondering if it's just a boy thing rather than an age thing because the girls his age seem to have a much better attention span and they will sit and play...good to know that someday he might actually sit at a table and play with toys that don't move or color or paint or even read a book! • def an age thing. My DS who turned 3 last month has been doing the wooden puzzels for what seems like forever. He probably got really into them around 2. and is currently doing 30 pc puzzles. He LOVES creating his own train track layout and legos are one of his favorites! A lot of those sound like toys that he just hasn't hit age wise yet.

  • you can put them away until he seems more interested in doing those types of things. he will get better in the attention span as he gets older.
