Infertility

Acupuncture ladies, come on in!

Can you tell me about your experiences with it? Timing with treatments, cost, etc.?

I appreciate your help!!

Re: Acupuncture ladies, come on in!

  • I am only doing acu this cycle.  It is too expensive to continue as insurance doesn't cover it for me.  We figured that we would give it a try just so we weren't thinking "What if?"  I would check with your insurance before going because some insurance companies do cover.

My first consultation was $100.  This is where she sat down, talked a little about her background and how acu can help with infertility.  Then she went on to asking me questions about procedures we have done so far and a background on my medical history.  After speaking to me, she tested my levels (balance, estrogen, progesterone etc.) and then gave me a treatment.

The following sessions are $70.  The reason why it was so expensive is because she wanted me to come in 2x a week until my IUI and then 1x a week after the IUI.   Even though it is very relaxing, I can't see spending $500 a month on something that might or might not work.

FYI: I might say something different in a week if I get a BFP.

  • Acupuncture puts your internal systems (circulation, digestion, hormones, etc) into balance. I went once a week or sometimes three times a month during my iui's and IVF. I don't think there is much point to going just once or twice unless the practitioner finds everything to be balanced and healthy- and I'm not sure how long it takes for them to get a sense of that. Once you have been going regularly, the need for specificity of timing treatments exactly goes down. Now I go twice a month to keep my headaches away. I had very very few side effects and mood swings and I attribute that to the acupuncture.
  • I have not started accupuncture.  Was looking into it last cycle.  On Friday I was calling around-and found a chiropractic school.  They charge $25 per session, including for the initial consultation.  For that price we can give it a whirl next cycle.  All students are closely supervised by trained professionals.

  • I go once a week for balance, stress management, etc. My insurance pays 50% of ten yearly visits, and so far my copay has only been $29.99.

  • I love Acu (Acupuncture)!!!  I have been going on a weekly basis since Nov 10'.  I don't know if it helped with my 1st BFP in March, but all I know is that it helps me relax and gives me more energy.

As far as cost, my insurance covers 10 visits, but that's not until I max out my high deductible, so right now I am paying around $45 per visit and my 1st consult visit was $75 I think, BUT like the pp, I go to a Chiropractic college and have students, that are supervised by a licensed Acu, work on me.

    Here are some tips to help you;

During your 1st appt it will take about 1.5 hrs....most of the time will be spent asking questions about your medical history, etc...do tell your Acu everything, don't hold back and don't be shy....your Acu will base your treatments off this information.  Make sure you wear loose comfortable clothing, shave your legs, and maybe make sure your toes and feet are ready for public viewing.  Once the needles are in, your Acu will leave you alone for 20+ minutes with the lights off and relaxing music will be playing....this is your time to relax, do your best to not think about anything...maybe even nap (I usually fall asleep).

Let me know if you have any other questions.  GL and I hope you enjoy Acu!

  • After my c/p in March I started going to Acu. I love it!  My acupuncturist is so sweet and positive.  She specializes in infertility and has a pretty good success rate.  Its $55 a week OOP.  The herbs aren't too expensive but if you're doing acu along with IUI/IVF, she doesn't have you take herbs.  HTH!

    TTC since September 2007 Dx - Unexplained 4 Clomid cycles all BFNs clomid/hcg/IUI#1 - #6 BFN IVF #1 cancelled due to slight OHSS IVF #2 BFP 3/24!! C/P Clinical Trials start May 2012 IUI#1 - BFN IUI#2 - BFN IUI#3 -
  • Thanks so much for all your responses ladies!

I'm waiting until my RE gets back into town to see if she can refer me to an Acu that specializes in infertility.

I'll look forward to continuing to hear about how acu is helping your journey, and I'm sure I'll think of more questions in the meantime :)

  • I forgot to add that my RE highly recommends acupuncture.  Here is what he has on his website regarding it:
