I just found out that I am pregnant. I have been eating 1200 calories per day. I know this will need to increase now that I am pregnant. Does anyone know where I can find a calculator to determine how many calories I need per day? I don't have an appointment with a nutritionist yet but want to get a head start on eating enough calories. Thanks.
Re: Calories needed while pregnant
Congrats
Like PP said its usually 300 calories per baby per day in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters if you started at a normal rate. However, in the first trimester its usually recommended (provided you are not over or underweight) to add about 150 like an apple and light yogurt ...during first trimester the actual caloric needs of the baby are nearly negligible and you're mostly building up fluid stores/ placenta ect for your developing baby.
You can check What to Expect When Your Expecting-- either online or the book and they have a guide for what to eat when your expecting if you like.
As will be the case for the next 9 months-- your OB trumps everyone though pretty much in their reccomendations.
I would wait and talk to your nutritionist. My doctor told me they are no longer recommending women increase calorie intake for the sake of increasing calorie intake. Therefore there is no magic number of calories to add. According to her, the new recommendation is to continue eating as you were, but increase as needed to curb hunger/nausea/etc.
1200 is a restrictive diet intended for weight loss. It's basically the lowest a woman should ever go without risking metabolic slow down.
Definitely talk to your nutritionist and do some online research- just google "calories to maintain weight" and you will find a calculator. Pregnant women are asked to eat 200-300 calories ABOVE the normal calories needed to maintain a healthy weight. 1200 is too low as would be 1400 or 1500 calories (this opinion is based on everything I have ever read about nutrition).
