Austin Babies

please diagnose my boob(bf related)

So about 4 weeks ago I got what I thought was a clogged milk duct and at the same time, I was also having severe nipple pain when nursing.  I thought the nipple pain was thrush and I was using the triple paste with that and it improved. The problem is the clogged duct well, I can't even tell if it's a clogged duct anymore. When I was nursing my other 2 and I got clogged ducts they were small, like maybe the size of a quarter and although painful, I could massage and express them out and they got better. This one is seriously the size of my fist. It finally went away after a week and a half and then was gone for maybe 2 weeks and then it's back now along with the nipple pain. I can pump it and massage it and it really doesn't help. I even tried to feed him where he was laying down and I was on all 4's over him(weird, I know but kellymom said to try it) and it didn't really help. I don't think it's mastitis because I haven't had a fever or anything like that. Any ideas? Is it a clogged duct and I need to just keep going or is it thrush or mastitis or some other random thing?

My boob and I both thank you for your help! :)

  • I would call someone.  Either an LC or your OB/GYN.  I didn't breastfeed for very long, but that just doesn't sound normal.  If you're doing everything you can to make it go away and it's not, then you need to ask a professional.

  • i agree- i think its time to talk to a professional.  i'd go see your ob or an lc :(  i hope it clears up!
  • Thrush can last for weeks...this is something that I know all too well:( hope you get your answers soon, pain while BFing is not fun!

  • At that size, it could be a breast abcess although I wouldn't think it could come and go like that unless there was just a large dilated area from pressure from other clogged ducts? Infection can take many forms but a large painful area that persists should be examined by someone.

If you're interested in prevention - From Jack Newman

Lecithin is a food supplement that seems to help some mothers prevent blocked ducts.  It may do this by decreasing the viscosity (stickiness) of  the  milk,  by increasing the percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the milk.  It is safe, inexpensive, and seems to work in some cases.  The dose is 1200 mg four times a day.    There  is more to preventing blocked ducts than taking lecithin.  See handout #22  Blocked Ducts and Mastitis.
