I'm not a fan of these at all, and get invited all the time. And no matter how much they push that "no pressure to buy, just stop by!" you know you're expected to buy something. I always politely decline. I think the worst is the whole Stella & Dot line. Seems SO saturated and I know so many people that are selling it. I'm not into jewelry at all, so that one really doesn't interest me, but I'm surprised at how many people are selling it.
Popular thing out here is parties to sell children's clothing. I went to two different ones, bought two things that are not my style, and have since declined subsequent invites. For the most part, you can get cuter clothes in regular stores, for less.
I will say the one exception is Matilda Jane. I think those clothes are precious, and unique from what's in the stores. I bought a mama skirt from that line and get compliments on it every time I wear it. If I had a girl (or if they had a larger mama line), I would happily attend those parties.
How funny, I just signed up with Stella & Dot for fun. S&D is definately very popular in Texas.
I personally really like home parties but I also love to shop. I would hate for someone to come to one of my parties and feel obligated to buy something. If I invited anyone on here to a party and you are not into it, please let me know. I won't be offended and I don't want to bug anyone.

It really depends for me. Most of the time I enjoy them because of the company, and I don't feel a ton of pressure to buy. If I do, it's almost always something small, and I've actually gotten a few things that I really like, like my Pampered Chef stoneware loaf pans. What bugs me though is when the same group of people keeps inviting the same guests to every party. An old coworker of mine sold PC and she would just rotate hosting parties at everyone in the office's houses, and the guest list was pretty much always just the rest of the office plus a few extra friends and family members. I never went to any of those on principle (but I did order my awesome loaf pans from her catalog).

Worst thing someone can do with these parties is misrepresent them. My SIL got into them and tried to disguise one as a family BBQ. I tried to re-arrange my schedule to be there because I'm all down for visiting with family. When it didn't pan out, and I felt so guilty. I confided in my mom about feeling bad and that's when she let me in on the fact that it was one of those sales parties. I was beyond mad. If you hold these parties.. please don't lure people in under false pretenses.
My SIL has these all the time. She was really into that Lia Sophia stuff and would have parties every few months and invite the same people. As her SIL, I felt obligated to go and buy something, even though I NEVER wear jewelry. Not even earrings. I didn't mind going, but she would constantly bug people into ordering so she could get her free hostess gifts and would sit there and go through the catalog and pick before anyone would order. She also did the gold parties but I never went. I don't mind going if it's something I like, and there's money to spend, otherwise I feel weird going and not buying.
My aunt did a Glamour Shots party a long time ago. We all got hookerized and now have a million pictures to prove it.
I know I'm jumping in late. I am a rep with Wildtree. It was important for me that it was a consumable product. I won't bore here with details in the company.
One thing to consider with these parties is that a lot of these reps are women like you and I who are trying to make money, extra money, and some cases build careers while they are able to stay home with their families. It is quite alright (at least with me) to be honest and say you aren't interested.
I held a Partylite party once (the way they do them, you don't need to be a rep to host one) and literally told people, "I'm having a Partylite party, come by and eat food and only order something if you want." Since I wasn't a rep I didn't care if I sold anything outside of what I wanted to buy. So it really WAS low-key, and we ended up playing DDR for most of the time.
