Help! DS Won't Stop Banging his Head Against Things!

I don't know what to do ladies... For the past month now, whenever DS gets upset, he lays down on the ground and bangs his head or forehead (hard!) against the floor.

Today, when I was putting him down for a nap he kept throwing his head back against his crib cause he was upset that I wasn't going to rock him to sleep. He does not do this to DH, just me when it comes to nap time.

Do any of your LO's bang their heads? What do you do to stop it? When he throws fits we just let him be and ignore him, but when he is in his crib I'm worried about him hurting himself. Any suggestions?

  • I was told to ignore it because they are doing it to get a reaction out of you. I have the same issue and it is hard to ignore him

  • The other night, Liam head butted his crib three times on purpose after I put him down for bed.  :(

I just ignore him when he does it.  If he starts throwing a tantrum when I am holding him or I can get to him quickly enough I place him on the carpet so that, if he does hit his head, he's not banging it against a hard surface.  Then I walk away and wait until he's done.  It's hard but it helps lessen the severity of the fit.

I'm so glad to know my DS isn't the only one who does this!  My problem is that our whole house is hardwoods, and he always bangs his head on the floor or the wooden coffee table.  I can ignore a tantrum, but I really have a hard time ignoring it when he does this and usually end up picking him up.

  • Ask your pedi but I have heard this is something they do, also, to self-soothe and it is just a phase which should pass.
